My short answer is yes. They filmed it, partially burned notes were found on the beach, bank statements show the withdrawal, and they paid the fine for destroying the money It would have been cool if they kept touring with the ashes throughout the UK. They basically held a few town-hall type meetings to see what people thought about the burning. I'm not sure how many they did but in the one I listened to the people got really disgusted with them. Mostly they couldn't understand why B&J didn't donate it to charity rather than waste it. I'm not sure what reaction they were expecting but it was pretty interesting listening to people getting so angry that they could barely speak. If you think about it, they actually boosted the value of the UKP by taking all that money out of circulation. Why should you pay a fine for doing that? Is it not a law against the defacing of money in the UK?.. possibly for it being a public government document? On Wed, 8 Dec 2004 21:29:21 +0000, K. Weston <listreader@gmail.com> wrote:

i've always thought that, yes, they could have given it to charity, could have helped less fortunate people, but if you had a million quid, would you really give it away to charity? people are all very high minded and moralistic about it when it's hypothetical and it's not their money, but if they actually had a million quid, they'd end up spending most of it on mostly unimportant thing for themselves, and only giving part of it away to ease their guilty consience. it's a far more selfless and noble act to set fire to it all. i seem to remember there being a quote from jimmy roughly along those lines. something about how they would have just spent it on something pointless, so better to do nothing with it. . -- --- Fix me now, I wish you would bring me back to life -- --------------------------------------------------- -- -- illitrate Publicashions --- - jai@illitrate.co.uk - http://www.illitrate.co.uk/ - --- ------------------------------------------------- ---

so, say, tomorrow morning, you wake up and on the doormat is a letter saying "really sorry, have checked the original tapes, turns out we should have included K Weston in the credits for those tracks, and our lawyers advise us that you're due your percentage of the royalties - please find enclosed a cheque for a million quid" you're telling us that you'd go straight out and give it away to charity would you? somehow i think you'd be just as selfish as everyone else on the planet and you'd spend it on yourself. new house, car, clear any debts or mortgage or whatever, etc etc etc and while it makes you happy - it doesn't actually do any real good for those in the world that actually need it - you might as well have burnt it all for all the good it'll do them -- --- from Spaced 1x02 - They're playing the Timewarp, Mike, I hate the Timewarp! It's boil-in-the-bag perversion for sexually repressed accountants and first year drama students with too many posters of Betty Boo, the Blues Brothers, the Big Blue and Blue Velvet on their blue bloody walls !! - It's just a song - I don't care !! I hate it !!!
stupid analogy sir if youll forgive me it would be stupid to give a million quid away if thats all you had you would give away part of it obviously... whereas klf had more than a million... obviously or they surely wouldnt have burnt it! __ kwis )) (( c[_] scuse the epenthesis ***************************** On 8 Dec 2004, at 22:51, jai wrote: so, say, tomorrow morning, you wake up and on the doormat is a letter saying "really sorry, have checked the original tapes, turns out we should have included K Weston in the credits for those tracks, and our lawyers advise us that you're due your percentage of the royalties - please find enclosed a cheque for a million quid" you're telling us that you'd go straight out and give it away to charity would you? somehow i think you'd be just as selfish as everyone else on the planet and you'd spend it on yourself. new house, car, clear any debts or mortgage or whatever, etc etc etc and while it makes you happy - it doesn't actually do any real good for those in the world that actually need it - you might as well have burnt it all for all the good it'll do them

This is all getting odd here. I don't know why someone would come to a mailing list for a band they don't like. I would have better things to do with my time. Personally, I don't think the KLF have done anything good for at least seven years - but for the time, they were very good. Then again, I haven't heard a good new Orb record in at least twelve years either. Though burning all that money was stupid and pointless. It may have been an art statement; if that statement was "we're so filthy rich we burn money, take that you stupid peons". Then again, we only saw the contents of one bank account, not any of the others. And with that I am off out, so have fun at home. Mark
