Hi there - can anyone tell me where the main sample (synth and beat) on Shag Times CD track 13 is from? I know they ahve nicked it but I can't place where from. the track is 118bpm but I know that it is used somewhere else too and that the 'bpm' names on Shag Times vary from those on records don't they? PK
If it's "The Porpoise Song" (118bpm), then it might well be Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean"? l8rs, Nick ;-)

Or it could be a Kraftwerk's "Technopop"? "The Porpoise Song ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ <various bad weather sounds> the ubiquitous 'Sound Effects' LP perhaps. <piece of classical music?> Carmen Burana by Karl Orff. This is used in the Old Spice adverts. Also used on 'O Fortuna' by Apothesis. <beat> There is a sampled beat that lasts about two bars halfway through the song. It is Kraftwerk's 'Technopop' If you know the song its easy to spot. Its on the remix version on 'History of The JAMs' and 'Shag Times' too" l8rs, Nick ;-)

Not wishing to be too pedantic, but then what else is sample spotting but a pedant's game?

That's "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff. And it's the whole symphony that is called "Carmina Burana", while the first (and last) "song" (all the pieces were based on Latin poetry found in a monastery) is the most famous piece and is called "O Fortuna". It was probably first made famous to the masses in the movie "Excalibur". Hence F.C.B. (Remixed by Nick Skitz) had a dance track called "Excalibur" (and also "Excalibur 2000", when they failed to come up with a new idea a few years later.) Apotheosis (both spellings appear on the net) had their dance remix back in 1992, as you mentioned. Enigma also used samples from "O Fortuna" heavily on the "Behind The Mirror" album, and I can recall 'The Art of Noise' used it too. In fact, I would hazard a guess that it may be the most commonly sampled piece of "classical" music (Orff lived from 1895-1982) ever. If anybody else knows of other examples where significant use of the track has been made then I'd actually be interested to know about it since I've sorted started a collection of them. Michael

I'm not sure if it's the same track as I'm not too hot on my classical music, but I think the track was also used on 'Hate me now' by US rapper 'Nas'. I could be wrong though. Andrew

l8rs,
No! Porpoise song can't be Billie Jean - can it? If it is then that sample is so blatantly obvious that I, erm, missed it..... Andrew

Well, according to this http://www.geocities.com/chestersblanketfort/klf.html it does - can't be arsed to listen to the song, though I might do now! Me thinks my 2nd post might have answered the question, and not the first! ;-> l8rs, Nick ;-)
