RE: [KLF] Two more simple questions
(1) "Penetration Seven Minutes" is a standard sample. I think it's from old NASA recordings It's used in SPACE and it's used in a few tracks by Greater Than One. I'm sure there are other bands that used it too. I have no idea about the Asian vocalist. (2) I would assume ME was never released because the KSTJ single was a chart failure. I can only comment on (1) in that a number of people I've spoken to who claim to have been closely linked with either Bill & Jimmy and/or Adrenalin between 1988 and 1991 swear that the odd-sounding "Love Trance" track really _was_ written and produced by The KLF. The general concensus of opinion is that they (Bill and Jimmy) were 50/50 over whether it was any good but they were losing faith in the whole Pure Trance series anyway and decided to ditch it. However test pressings, promos and an initial batch of finals were produced and - of course - many of these fell through the 'net' (the rest are allegedly in storage at Bill's farm) and into the hands of employees/general hangers-on. Certainly, I've seen copies of single-sided 12" records with "KLF006T-A-1" that play the notorious 'Love Trance' track. I've also seen a single-sided 12" with the same matrix that plays the "Monster Attack Mix" of What Time Is Love? (The a-side label had "Bill and Jimmy Meet The Monsters" written on in felt pen - maybe this is where the name came from?). I've also seen (and held) a 12" that was fully labelled up and came in the orange Pure Trance 3 sleeve and I managed to get hold of a small number of white labels with both tracks on them, some of which I auctioned off on eBay and some were sold privately (due to a mix-up I actually ended up selling/giving them all away so I don't have one of my own any more). There is also a theory that it's actually a messed up release in that it was meant to be another What Time Is Love? remix and that the 'Monster Attack Mix' should actually have been the A-Side, with the weird 'Love Trance' track on the B-Side (this does actually make more sense to me) - again, something odd happened and they (Bill and Jimmy) or someone else decided to swap it over to being a new release instead. The Asian vocalist I think is one of the girls featured on "1987", although no-one I've spoken to can confirm this. Of course, this could all be a big scam after all - who knows? Chris
Thanks for that full answer, Chris. I bought one of your promos, and it is excellent - except, whenever I listen to "Love Trance" I keep willing myself to like it, but it really is not as good as WTIL or 3 AM. There is, basically, no tune. I wondered if the Asian vocalist was one of the women who appear as the handmaidens of Mu in the "Rites" movie and on the cover of A:WTIL. Apparently, they also appear on the cover of the recent Belle and Sebastian album "Storytelling", too. http://www.galeon.com/allmusic/caratulas/b/Belle_And_Sebastian_-_Storyte lling-front.jpg And Paul's views on "Love Trance" hold water - the monster attack mix of WTIL (3 copies only as KLF4M, according to the discog) is stupidly rare, and the vinyl b-side to KLF6T doesn't sound like its been lifted off a CDR boot. Oh, and "Love Trance" has only recently appeared on a bootleg itself (I saw it on sale in a market in Glasgow) but it's probably lifted from the mp3 on Rob's ftp. I always thought the screams on the Monster Attack mix were probably Cressida, btw.
