Hi, folks, Simple question. What if the KLF had remained the KLF, with Brits awards split or K-Foundation money-burning, what would their career have been like? Suppose "The Black Room" had appeared in summer 1992, would it have anticipated the Prodigy's "Fat of the Land" five years early - or would it have just crashed commercially? Would things like "The White Room Movie" and the 1989 demos have gotten proper releases? Any more singles from "The White Room" (say "No More Tears")? Would Bill and Jimmy gone into producing other bands in a major way? Would their music have gone into "progressive" or "intelligence" house? Would they have continued releasing records with diminishing commercial results (like other big early 1990s rave acts) before experiening a commercial renaissance around 1996 (like the Prodigy, Leftfield and Orbital?) Box set? What do people think?
Nice question John Alternative history version A: 1993: Black Room is released: financial disaster. Bill and Jimmy are on the dole. No solstice ceremony on Jura, and no money burning either. They had their moment in music history, and as Don Lucknow predicted in 1987, they are thrown away by the music press. Everett True disses them in Melody Maker. They retire with no further releases. A best of compilation appears to fill their contract with record companies who hoped for another Justified and Ancient-like hit. The compilation bombs. 1997: Prodigy rips off Black Room. HUGE success. Everybody realizes KLF's genius. The compilation is re-released, with new tracks forced by the record companies. It disappears frm the shelves. Re-released. B+J are put on a reunion tour. They even recruit Wanda D. They are re-nominated for yet another Brit Award (this time they share it with The Five)! They decide to do a live version of America: What Time Is Love!!! The crowd's excited, and they think B+J are back to their old tricks when they walk onstage with Extreme Noise Terror, with machine guns and even a tank. They crowd is in for a surprise, however, because for this time our heroes will not be firing blanks, but real bullets. Alternative history version B: 1993: Black Room is released: SUCCESS! B+J decide to do more "progressive" techno. Their avantgarde experiMENATLism reaches bigger peaks than Squarepusher, Aphex Twin and even the Orb. They are deifinitely NO FUN anymore, but keep on releasing albums, which have nothing to do with their wildly creative firs five years. 1997: Prodigy rips off Blac Room. Even greater success than BR. 1999-2007: Prodigy rips off their progressive period. Et cetera et cetera ad nauseum. Oh, sorry for the crappy stories. That's all I could come up with. I think their history is just as good as it is now. Thank God they never did such humourless and boring things as later did Aphex, Orbital, Prodigy or the Orb. KLF were never boring... At least The KLF knew when to stop. _________________________________________________________________ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar - get it now! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/

1993 Black Room is released and praised by the critics while the whole world buys smoother electronic stuff. Not depressed by the failure of the singles "Deep Shit" and "Deep Shit 2" they start to work on an full length movie. 1994 "Whitney Joins The Jams" is reissued under the JAMS banner - this time of course featuring Whitney in person. It`s entering the UK Charts at #7 and is another huge succes. "Kyle Said To Jason" featuring (surprisingly) Kyle Minouge and Jason Donovan follows up the chart run. KLF found an publishing company called "Recycle Or Die". Bill`s Solo Album "The Man" get?s a remix treatment to make it more country punk. Luckily J.L. Pierce is around to redo any guitar parts while ex-Orb Andy Falconer gets production and engineer credits. Later on he admits "All I did was looking for the general vibe". 1995 Finally their full length movie "The Checkered Room" appears in theaters all over the world. The full length soundtrack comes with an additional ambient remix CD made by Alex P. Due to the huge international success secret meetings with ABBA?s management take place. 1996 The Reading Festival headlines THE KLF, LEFTFIELD & FAITHLESS. THE KLF aka THE JAMS release "Dancing Queen" c/w "All You Need Is Love" and top the charts once again. All profits made from these recordings are donated to the "Lost Continent Fund" for various charity projects. 1997 Madonna convinces J. Cauty to co-write and produce her next Album while Bill Drummond starts writing his Autobiography "Zoo & Menagerie". A Video Compilation "Let them all eat Ice-Cream" is published. 1998 Madonna releases "Way Off Light", the first single taken off it is called "deep-frozen" Bill Drummond undertakes a Club Tour of Readings, J. Cauty buys the whole ABBA music publishing rights and renames it Bi-Polar Music. 1999 After a creative break the KLF announce to split up with their best of compilation "Welcome To The Church Of The KLF" released on 12 31 1999 and available until 01 01 2000. klfboy _ schrieb:
