RE: [KLF] bring the beat back & unknown WTIL edit download --> Tracklist CD
I'll try digging up all the stuff I can find. Ok, a tracklist proposal; I would love to see the Kylie In A Trance (extended) track. It's featured on some (rare) bootlegs (the ones I HAVENT got :p). Ofcourse followed by the 'evil edit' of WTIL. The KLF Studio DAT recordings would be great also. The Goa mix of WTIL (one sided bootleg, orb related??) What about Madrugada Bandulu? As an intro/outtro track i'd say the intermezzo on Choc Ice 2 (Tammy version) 'they travel the world in their ice-cream van (..). Would love to hear that on this compilation, also as a contribution to Scott Piering. Starting with this one following the track from BTBB, wtil evil edit (since BTBB is the line from ricardo after the intermezzo of Scott). I for one think that the pure trance/chill out era is the most interesting part of the KLF reign. And just the rare stuff indeed..! Will it be pure KLF stuff or will it contain some early moody boys stuff as well (What is dub)? Maybe some early Cauty/ORB stuff. Should it be danceable music or just music which reminds you of them good ol' days?Am curious about your reactions! Maarten

interesting ideas, but kinda the opposite extreme to my suggestion that it should only include true KLF or JAMs releases! The Goa mix is one of many many unofficial remixes/bootlegs and i think is connected to another called the 'New York mix' but I would have to check that. But it is either a remix by someone far less well known than the Orb, or a cover a la Talla 2XLC or whatever they are called surely if we inlcude the Orb, Moody Boys and such 'unofficial' stuff as mentioned above, even over 2 discs the thing is really gonna lose focus? John really picked out some already rare mixes and in some cases, even rarer edits and alt mixes and did a fine job IMHO as a separate project, as well as putting together a 2 disc TWROST set for my own indulgence, i also like the idea of producing sets featuring exclusively 'unofficial' remixes, and another of covers/fakes such as 'Vamos' and the Chromix version of WTIL (which i love, despite not being a big trance fan). When I get these done with perhaps some artwork i'll post the tracklists here for people's opinions, and perhaps do some sort of tree trading thing if people like the look of them tbc. For this project, i think we should go for rare and extended mixes, the radio edits were purely for the mainsteam marketing ploy of the KLF to fund their more important remixes. And also this is for the fans out there who crave tracks they dont have, for example; Madrugada 7:52min version, Trance Kylie Express 7:11,WTIL power remix 7:37 or WTIL live oz mix...er what about 2 cds, one mixed and the other with every version of WTIL that can be got?

My god! Is this the busiest the list has been for a couple of years? Great to see.
Firstly, thanks to Simon for upping the Evil Edit. The Shamen had a track called "Evil Edit" on Phorward, didn't they? Anyone know if there might be a connection? Might B&J have got someone else (the Beatmasters or whoever) in to remix WTIL as a potential commercial single, and then it was abandoned? Alternatively, is it maybe the version intended for inclusion on TWROST in 1989? Maybe there are other odd tracks lurking out there - for example, how many people could have guessed "Mommy Don't" existed until it actually appeared?
Also, Megaupload. Well, I tried to download the WAV, and it told me the file was "temporarily unavailable". Oh, well, I'll just have to do with the mp3. :-)
As far as the greatest hits, well, Simon, you flatter me with the suggestion I write the sleevenotes! I like the idea of aping "Shag Times" with its press cuttings. Also, if this is a follow-up to "Shag Times" (JAMSCD20, of course!) then sticking purely to the KLF era is far more (forgive me) justified! Maybe we could cheat a bit and include the Timelords and IGUN. The reason why I mentioned radio edits for everything was purely because (a) it makes more space, and (b) the single, the edit, was always what the KLF were most interested in, I think, Their pop period has to be defined by radio edits. Other, more experimental and unreleased eras, could be better served by long and rare mixes.
Anyway, I must go to bed. I'll be at Celtic Connections in Glasgow later this week, so might not be e-mailing much. I'm getting very excited about this Greatest Hits project, though! :-)

OK for Maarten and anyone else who is interested here is the tracklist for the 'Bring the Beat Back' CD-R bootleg
I think this was *ahem* 'released' around 1997-98 and came on a blank blue cd-r in a card sleeve, printed sticker with the title and a nice little black inner sleeve but no other info/tracklist
1. WTIL (Power mix) 2. WTIL (Primal remix) 3. WTIL (Techno Slam mix) 4. WTIL (Pure Trance mix) 5. WTIL (Unknown edit - see below) 6. WTIL (DMC or similar mix - see below) 7. J&A (Anti-Accapella mix) 8. 3AM Eternal (feat ENT) 9. Madrugada Eterna (Club mix) 10.America WTIL (KLF92promo2 mix AKA What Time is January)
I sometimes get the Primal & Techno slam mixes the wrong way around so just in case, the former has an intro before the 2001 sample, the latter starts with the sample and is generally 'slammier'! I also don't have 004T to hand so track 4 is the mix with a beat. Track 6 is the DMC or similar DJ remix that starts "What Time Is Love W-W-What Time Is Love Love" or whatever...not great.
Track 5 is the aforementioned unknown edit i have never seen or heard elsewhere. Thomas, some time ago I shared this with the AudioGalaxy KLF group and you suggested it was the Power mix edit, but it's not! (incidentally the Power mix edit is an interesting track and quite different to the full mix IIRC). This edit has similarities with the Power, Monster Attack and Live at the Land of Oz mixes with similar (but different) 'live' drums, but is quite intense in it's tweaking and phasing if you turn up the volume. Accordingly I have uploaded it for people to check out, and have called it the evil (almost live!) edit, just for the hell of it:

it seems we are now planning two different sets of compilations John's original idea was a compilation of tracks to mark the 10th anniversary, to leave around the country in obscure places, made to look like a cheaply produced "best of" compilation cash-in. i think the aim of this one is more to remind people of what the KLF was about, as well as maybe make it available to some new ears too. but in a prank style - random and obscure points where the cds are made available, cheap and tacky appearance - hopefully the kind of prank Bill & Jimmy would approve of however, a lot more of the recent suggestions for track lists are leaning towards tracks that are rarer, or obscure, or just more interesting, from a collectors view point. these tracklists are really only going to be of interests to the like of us on this list. who either already have them, or would probably only be interested in downloading them and burning to their own particular tracklist i guess there's no reason why we can't do both, but surely most of these tracks are already available via the FTP server aren't they? so why waste the effort of putting them on a cd when the intended target of the cds are people who won't understand them anyway as always, just my 2 cents... or 1 penny at todays exchange rate On 17 Jan 2007, at 22:02, Maarten Bouwes wrote:

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't the Lost Tracks of Mu something like this? They were only for this list, but this has already been done. I think that placing them around the "area" is a neat idea, but IMHO, keep them to KLF tracks. The Moody boys are not being celebrated. They were not major contributors to the myth.

The Shamen had a
track
called "Evil Edit" on Phorward, didn't they?
I'll be at Celtic Connections in Glasgow later
this week, so might not be e-mailing much. I'm getting very excited about this Greatest Hits project, though! :-)

yeah i got that White Room CD too, wrongly thinking it would be an improvement on previous cassette versions. also 20 pounds as you said. perhaps some of the other tracks were harder to get back then but you are not missing much re, BTBB now, and i've just made the only interesting track available =)
sorry for anyone having problems with megaupload, i simply copied the links it gave me but perhaps i missed something...don't use it very often

That other CD-R also came in a white card sleeve with a printed sticker
saying: "KLF White Room s/track". Black innersleeve, no other info. It's in use now for storing my Love Trance labels. The CDR costed me around 20 pounds. Still got some letters laying around from a guy named "Pete" from vinyl addiction

Thomas, some time ago I shared this with the AudioGalaxy KLF
group and you suggested it was the Power mix edit, but it's not! Accordingly I have uploaded it for people to check out, and have called it the evil (almost live!) edit, just for the hell of it:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E39G8NIO
...is a WAV directly from the CD-R which my current computer drive seemed to manage OK sans the distortion i mentioned before (i had to do a bit of splicing due to the wonky track splits i mentioned). The distortion is possibly still present on the cymbal/hi-hat sounds as they sound a bit lispy, and there is a little background hiss at the end so if anyone feels the inclination to clean this up and probably do a better job than i could, please go for it
For those lazy f*ckers, dial-up kids or those with only a mild interest
here is an MP3:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IM5YMBZA
I would be interested to see what people think as I love this version...simple but effective, retaining the signature of the 004T mixes but a bit more varied and scary =)

Yeah, I think we need to keep the goal in mind. I think for the 20th anniversary we should be trying to make something which represents Bill and Jimmy's work as JAMMS, KLF, Timelords etc. for new listeners. Not the obscure mixes which we enjoy discovering about, but the most approachable tracks. We should be trying to pick things which might appeal now, which are still relevant, so Kylie Said To Jason is out, for example. So, for this sort of "enjoyable", "approachable", relevant track, but still maintaining a good spread, I'll propose a track-list. (This is why I think we should set up some sort of project page, just say the word, and I'll stay up all night and do it...) The popular, famous tracks should be on there, but mixed in with other stuff. The three stadium house trackso in a row would be a bit much! So with Justifications and without further ado! 1. Brownsville Turnaround On The Tex-Mex Border 1:47 2. Pulling Out Of Ricardo And The Dusk Is Falling Fast 1:29 These two provide a nice lead into the album, being the start of the Chill Out as they are. The ending of Brownsville doesn't fit too well, because it doesn't fall to silence like Ricardo does. 3. America No More 6:05 Still (sadly) politically relevant after all these years. I've always thought this to be one of their most intelligent efforts, and sadly under-appreciated. And it has bagpipes. Segues kind of nicely from the Chill Out stuff. From here on, the track order isn't so important. 4. What Time Is Love 5:17 Of course. What mix isn't terribly important, but it should be something fairly up-to-date. I've put the LP version in the playlist, but I'm not sure if that's the best choice. 5. Build A Fire 4:35 The one from The White Room 6. King Boy's Dream 0:59 7. 3 A.M. Eternal 3:35 I've put the Live At The S.S.L. version in my list, because I like the intro to that version. 8. Madrugada Eterna (Club Mix) 5:19 Gets a bit of the amazing Chill Out on there, while standing on its own four beats. 9. Last Train To Trancentral 3:42 The one I've put in my playlist starts with "Okay everybody, lie down on the floor and keep calm" 10. Mind The Gap 1:05 11. Stand By The Jams 3:39 Nothing wrong with a bit of Tammy, provides a break before the onslaught to follow... 12. Fuck The Millennium 13:57 13. Disaster Fund Collection 5:40 14. Doctorin' The Tardis 3:38 It was their number one after all! Despite all the moral questions about Glitter, I think the disk would be incomplete without it. 15. It's Grim Up North (part 1) 10:02 A classic dance track, I think it's perfect as the last big song on the album, with the big Jerusalem section, and then the birds etc. segue nicely into the Chill Out ending which follows. 16. Rock Radio Into The Nineties And Beyond 1:26 17. Alone Again With The Dawn Coming Up 0:16 The two of them to end the album, because I think Alone Again is too short on its own, and because the vocal sample in Rock Radio is just too apt... What do people think of that as a KLF retrospective? It's around 70 minutes, and could be made to fit on a CD with a little bit of trimming. I think this track-list a good mix of the famous classics with a few other interesting but approachable tracks. If an unknowing listener came upon it, it could pique their interest and encourage them to check out the site we'll have set up. www.whatthefuckisgoingon.com or something equally KLF-themed. We could mark each CD or case with a sort of serial number, and I could do up a little web application in PHP or MySQL which would allow people to enter the number of the CD they've found, so we can see where each person's planted CDs actually end up. I await your opinions! And let me know if you guys want that site, for managing this, for the tracklist etc. It would take me relatively little time, and might make this a lot easier. I wanna see this done, and I wanna see it done right. John PS: Amusingly, I realised the other day that I was only born a year before the release we are now celebrating.. Should it be danceable music or just music which reminds you of them good ol' days? Am curious about your reactions! Maarten _____

The Shamen had a
track
called "Evil Edit" on Phorward, didn't they?

Thomas, some time ago I shared this with the AudioGalaxy KLF
group and you suggested it was the Power mix edit, but it's not! Accordingly I have uploaded it for people to check out, and have called it the evil (almost live!) edit, just for the hell of it:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E39G8NIO
...is a WAV directly from the CD-R which my current computer drive seemed to manage OK sans the distortion i mentioned before (i had to do a bit of splicing due to the wonky track splits i mentioned).

Thanks the prob was my bad got it sorted earlier i would of mailed earlier but i had to go back to work, i wish there was a bigger word for THANK YOU. I was going through my KLF 12"s in prep for ebay but for once i was checking all the run out grooves as well, i have a couple that had the matrix codes written on the wrong sides had been crossed out and re-written ? I also have a record with the bar code missing from the label, moody boys selection i think it was.... anyway back to my thought, on the centre of 'Its Grim up North' other data says taken from the Black Room. So how about we make the Black Room. I.G.U.N. can be 1 track, Evil Edit no.2, any ideas what else might of gone on it? Whatever is decided for this tribute, how about we include all the 'other data' comments somehow. They always intrested me back in the day.
