Legal advice on "Madchester" (OT)
Hi. I'm in the process of writing a stage musical about the indie/dance music craze of the late-eighties, early-nineties, particularly the "Madchester" music scene. I'm hoping to use many of the original songs - the Roses, the Mondays, the Las, etc. etc. - in the same way that Queen, Madness and Boy George have all turned up in London musicals lately. Does anyone know of a good place to start for clearance on copyright on this sort of thing - maybe a website, a phone number or an organisation? I know a KLF mailing list may seem a strange place worry about copyright law, but I hope someone will be able to help me. If you want, you can e-mail me direct off list. Thanks, John Not Scots, just Scott-ish
The KLF got done by the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) so I presume they should be the first port of call. Andrew

If you are effectively making 'cover versions' of the tracks by performing them live, then the MCPS will not be involved, as you are not 'mechanically' using the original recordings. Try the PRS (Performing Right Society) at www.prs.co.uk - Andy_R
