Re: black smoke / speaking out / primal scream
Its like people think its ok now to say this or that but why didnt they at the time? Its like loads of punks ive met going on about war this and atom bomb that, then when anything kicks off they shut up. Is this cos while normally these events would be ideal for their artistic shock value and a way to make themselves feel 'righ on' or is it because they realise if they take advantage of such evil at such short notice they are scared of getting their fucking heads kicked in by Sun readers?
take the case of primal scream's "bomb the pentagon" (which I heard for the first time about 8 hours before the 9/11 event) - now, what would you do if you were in their shoes? there was some discussion in the following weeks and months over whether or not they really "meant" what was said in the lyrics, but the point is this: now that amerikan "leaders" state (and to this day continue to state) that any who dissent will be considered the enemy, what the hell do you do with a song like that? seriously, even today you can't mention facts about that event without getting threats (from a MAILING LIST!!!) as far as "speaking out" goes - PLENTY of people said and sang about it at the time, and the reason you may not have heard it yourself is that they were met with EVEN MORE resistance than what you see today
We've all gotta enjoy stuff and theres a time and a place, but things of such importance really shouldnt be met with an up yours and such negativity which i've seen on go on. You may not wanna read it but its not like someones trying to stir up race hatred or some shit. There's more discussion about whether its related to a band who arent even going anymore than there is about such mixed up times. Thats probably an excellent illustration of what a fucked up race we are
as you've seen, you can't make people talk about things they don't want to talk about, you can only make them talk about how much they don't want to talk about them and if you've been following my posts, you can't even make them talk about things they claim they WANT to talk about :) I think all those things are worth discussing and NEED to be discussed, but bottom line: people ARE scared that's not a criticism, that's just plain observation, and pretty much what you said yourself and unfortunately for "free speech", artists (and others) can not be as blatant as "bomb the pentagon" anymore
