Actually, I'm not so sure about that. I'm finding a lot of stuff out courtesy of a few other mailing lists from which I've managed to get hold of stuff that was once up on the web but now, curiously, isn't. This "Michael K" has been about and although, I admit, there's so much stuff out there that it seems unlikely that it could all be one person, a lot of commentators seem, as I do, to be of the opinion that the writing style mostly belongs to one individual. It's a pretty individual style of writing! It would seem that 'Michael K' and 'X$X' are multiple names or multiple projects but in fact some say they're something else. One or two reckons that it's an inversion of the usual multiple name thing because it appears that 'Michael K', as referenced in one or two of the articles that are out there, particularly the one where Peter Robinson 'outs' him (or does he? he he), is an identifiable person, in reality. ie. Michael Kearney. So the act of declaring himself a multiple name has been taken by some as some kind of ''act of suicide' because obviously if I get held responsible for a bunch of crazies adopting my name, and I'm pretty well-known then I can expect to have bills arrive and no doubt the usual double order of concrete at the front door every morning along with the milk :) The real act of suicide apparently, was when 'Michael K' did a bit of a 'Howard Beale' and railed against Christians, Islamic Fundamentalists, Car-owners, the Oil Industry in a series of widely distributed rants in 2000. (I've just paid somebody for an american 'bootleg' book 'K MAIL' issued in 2001 which has all of the stuff in it, so let's hope it arrives and my credit card doesn't get ripped off) I know there's some of this in your archive too but I haven't yet got to reading about that. From excerpts I've seen so far it certainly seems like suicide to me. Did he get killed? I doubt he made it back from that one! Although one person has claimed to have seen an interview done more recently where 'he' says that the multiple name was "an attempt to reach the 'real human community' and that the experiment worked because although people could have fucked him, they didn't. Well, that's Ok, but if the 'K MAIL' story is anything to go by, they couldn't have fucked 'Michael K' any better than ''Michael K'. Another shade of opinion is that 'Michael K' did get some heat and redeveloped the whole thing so that 'K' is now the multiple name. Others have said that this was already part of the game back in 1998. I nneed to see more stuff on this but there doesn't seem to be much out there just now. It's difficult to track because you're depending on people digging out stuff from their own hard drive from when the stuff was available at live URLs. I admit I'm very confused (especially about this diea that 'Michael K' was 'Mickey McElwee' back in the '80's which somebody here has mentioned) but then I guess that why it's interesting. Art should be confusing, challenging, outrageous imho. Of course, all of this is nominally OFF-TOPIC so I'm not going to disrespect the list by posting or discussing a whole lot of stuff I've found if nobody's too interested in this strand although I will post is this link as this is part of that 'Was X$X the KLF?' thing that I've heard about on another list I'm on (way back on the Shamen's Nemeton list maybe '95?). Again I haven't yet got into the KLF archive to rookie about for info but this is a very interesting recording which seems to relate to the tings I read in that Peter Robinson article about X$X that's was on mancentral. NB: MP3 not made by me so I'm not responsible for the quality! ftp://firebox.co.uk/loading/donotsellafter1999.mp3 Groovy and very intriguing I'm sure you'll agree. Don't know how long ago this was but I think it's the last few weeks. Does anybody know any more especially about the 'Eleven Debut singles'? Presumably, you lot are familiar with the full story behind X$X? I'm not. So any comments welcome, please. PS-Anybody downloaded 'The Building' at any point in its history? I've heard that it's always closed although I've always heard that it's always oopen, with the right 'key'. ?? Again any info welcome on this subject, on list or off. Thanx- Ray Don Gagen wrote:
Michael K is an pseudonym used by many people. You never know who Michael K really is or if ONE really existed. Very confusing, very discordian...
