Bill has talked about it the most even though they weren't supposed talk about it at all after they signed some sort of contract. I think it was supposed to expire in 23 years from the day of the burning. In one interview he described it like the ultimate manifestation of rock-and-roll. Like a band smashing up all their equipment after a concert. Another time it was described as performance art, like the previous pieces they created by nailing something like 50,000 UKP to a piece of wood. The idea: is it worth more as art or as cash. (They might have been fined for that and not the burning. Can't remember...) In a recent interview Bill said it evolved from a childhood whim that stuck with him. I think he said something he and a bunch of other children were talking about what they would do with a million pounds. He said he'd burn it simply to shock and impress the other kids. He's also described it as quitting while they were ahead and on top. Like creating a painting and tossing the paint before you put down too many strokes and it ceases to be as fresh and spontaneous.
