I finally managed to get hold of a copy of "Unearthed Volume 1 - Liverpool Cult Classics" a few days ago, which features Melting Blue Delicious as the first track. I'd always assumed that the version included was "The St Petersburg Mix" from "Just Say Yes" Volume 4 (i.e., the mix done by King Boy and Dave Balfe, with all the train noises) but to my delight discovered that this CD actually features a second, far more commercial, Bill Drummond ***solo*** remix of MBD, which sticks more closely to the "Space Flower" original but with added backing singers and post-production. Also, it's not included in the KLF discog. If you check Paul Simpson's Skyray website, you'll find proposed cover designs for the single, which unfortunately never saw the light of day back in 1990 (in fact, the parent album "Space Flower" wasn't ever released in the UK - despite featuring a stellar Liverpool rock cast, including Ian Broudie and Ian McNabb). Presumably, this would have been the "single mix" had it ever seen the light of day. And it's fascinating to hear Bill Drummond "remodel" something without the keyboard imput of Jimmy Cauty. It's quite a funky reworking, complete with Screamadelica-esque backing vocals. The sleeve notes of "Unearthed Volume 1" state that Simpson himself invited his old manager Drummond to remix the track, and both the "St Petersburg" and this single mix were the result. Also, "Unearthed Volume 1" contains another KLF link - the next track in the CD is "Do the Chud" by the Chuddy Nuddies, which was originally a double-a side with "Big in Japan" by Big in Japan, released on the Eric's label in Liverpool in 1977, Bill Drummond's first appearance on record! Anyway - advert over. ;-) John PS - I shall try and forward this new mp3 onto Don and Rob, for upping to the ftp.
