I agree that vinyl rips should be 24/96( didn't at least one or two companies used to make good quality 24/96 pres for decent prices? The least expensive one I could find was $400). Unfortunately my 16/44.1 is the best preamp I could afford but hope to change this should funds become available then I'll rerip the lot! Hi List,
This is a great project and i have many flac files that id like to contribute. My real concern is who is going to... and how this is going to be organised? And if it is meant to be a lossless highest quality archive should we not adopt the flac standard? Flac give exact audio copy - cloned reproduction... its free and is the new industry standand for music. We are seeing uploads with apple, aiff,mp3,m4a,wav etc.. not really ideal. Flac is very much the standard now for lossless, most online music shops use it too... even the beatles released in it.
Then from flac people can convert to whatever they like... wav if need be....
I agree with Mark - it would be fine to introduce some standards. While I prefer FLAC myself, I am open to any audio format, as long as it supports *lossless* encoding. I would recommend to use 16 bit/44kHz lossless for CD Rips and 24 bit/96kHz for Vinyl Rips. CD Rips should be exact (e.g. using Exact Audio Copy) and without further editing. Regarding Vinyl Rips, there is enough room for religious debates :-D (pop/hiss elimination, noise reduction, eq, ...) - I think that "less is more" here.
BTW - I don't have a decent record player at the moment so I cannot provide any vinyl rips. But I'm just ripping my CD collection and will post some links to some more rare / bootleg stuff soon.
Another thing Mark pointed out is whether there would be some kind of central coordination for this project (and maybe one central FTP server), or if we just want to continue posting links here so that everybody can compile his/her own "ultimate high-quality Arkive"?
Best regards Bert
