Not all that strange - most of the other players will be using the same decompressors as WMP does.  It's probably WMP that's dropped a buggy plugin onto your system during installation - try uninstalling it...

Is it?  I'm using 2.91 because I thought that was.  And yeah, it certainly got out of control after that.

 

WinAmp is and always has been my player of choice.
