42 came about, apparently, because John Cleese and Graham Chapman once discussed what the funniest two digit number was, and came up with the answer "42". Although Douglas Adams claimed he came up with it separately, most people believe he nicked it from the Pythons. In "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", incidentally, there's lot of references to "scene 24" - the closest they ever got to 23-ism (although it is 42 backwards, I suppose). 42 - 23 = 19. Does this mean Paul Hardcastle is the missing link? ;-) John -----Original Message----- From: klf-bounces+john=highlandland.fsnet.co.uk@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:klf-bounces+john=highlandland.fsnet.co.uk@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Andy Lee Sent: 20 October 2004 15:41 To: All bound for Mu-Mu Land. Talking of which, I recently picked up a copy of the 3-CD set "Douglas Adams at the BBC", a collection of his sketches, interviews and radio and TV shows. One excerpt on disc 1 is from the show "The Burkiss Way", from his days before writing "Hitch-Hiker's Guide", and it's a sketch called "23 Gungadin Crescent." The sketch happens outside this house, number 23, for a while, before the cast move to number "42 Logical Positivism Avenue".
23 to 42 ... and they say Douglas Adams wasn't interested in numerology! ;-)
