Ahhhhh.

You read my mind. I was researching de-interlacing VHS this very lunchtime. Listening to the recent Waiting re-release made me want to re-grab that as well. Maybe this weekend I'll roll up a nice fat H.264 rip.

The version that has made it to DvD is good, certainly better than several AVI or MPG versions floating around on the internet, but I think it could be improved.

I don’t want to offend anyone, as I couldn’t be more grateful for the DvD I have, it made the creation of Ford Shrinelord so much easier.

But…….

The transfer demonstrates a lot of artefacting, particularly on panning shots, which I am certain were not present on the original tapes. The artefacting I see is often associated with digital conversions, and turns straight edges into jagged lines during camera movement or panning shots. This demonstration on one of the oldest viral AVIs I can remember, shows what I am referring to. It is, however, more severe in this example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aX-Vci6On3U&feature=related

I know the original tapes are incredibly rare – but does anyone have the means to carry out a professional conversion, in keeping with the standards that we have seen with all the audio that has recently been made available.
