Jams - 1987 the 45 edits (notes)

Kicks off with 'Me Ru Con' sung by Zuy Khiem, a Vietnamese friend of

ours. If you are lucky enough to have the 7-inch version of it you'll

have the English translation on the sleeve. We never planned to have

this on the LP, he just sang this while the tapes were running when he

was down in the studio doing the bits of tenor sax and clarinet that

are on the other tracks. It blew our minds.

^ Duy Khiem, Vietnamese clarinetist, and old friend of Drummond was one of the musicians on 'The Man'. He plays clarinet on 1987, and 3am, and pops up in the video (stadium) and TOTP appearance in traditional costume during the clarinet solo. He sings the traditional Vietnamese song 'Me Ru Con' which appears on 1987.

Yeah, it says sax on ‘3am eternal (ssl)’ and clarinet on ‘white room’ on discogs. Sounds like he did a lot on 1987 as well.

IMO it’s the sax and clarinet that really makes 1987 as a ‘musical’ album, so props to Zuy. I always thought he was of African descent by his voice.
