This list is highly skewed by something called the "recency effect".  Especially when you talk about the addition of the Strokes.  It's the same reason that films that come out just after the Ocsars will largely be forgotten by the time the next years nominations come around.  They actually re-released Braveheart the same year to insure this wouldn't happen.    You're right, it's total bullshit. 

It works to your advantage in the workplace.  You don't have to do any more than is expected of you for the majority of the year. The larger the company the more you can push the envelope of slack and fall below expectation.  Just plan on busting ass the last 2 or 3 months before you're due for review.   Don't take vacation until after the review.  It's never fails to get a good raise in salary.  It's just human nature.
