...and actually, the more I think about Thomas' explanation the more it makes sense.  In that it's not a remix at all, but a track inspired by or based on.  This makes sense in the abstract, but I still feel it's improper to classify such a track as a remix since that implies some sort of mixing of the original track.  And if I pick up a 12" claiming to be a remix of a classic track I expect to be reminded of that track.
