He (allegedly) worked as a trawlerman when he was 17, I believe, which would be before he went to art school, maybe it was just a few months, a summer job between school and college, maybe he didn't even last the summer, after discovering the reality wasn't like reading Jack London,
I remember there was a radio interview in which he talked about this. Got to listen to it again tonight so I can do a brief transcript.
