just trying to discuss. no real point.
On a more general topic, I think this is a perfect example of where Bill and Jimmy have lost touch these days. General reports we get back from public events where Bill and Jimmy turn up point towards their attitude that their old music fans should "get a life" and move on, much as they have.
possibly this could be likened to those bands who have a long catalogue, and having to do concerts to support new albums. the bands need to, and perhaps want to, play the new stuff because that's what they're doing now. they throw in one or two for the old fans, but mostly its about their current work. it'd be kinda annoying having to discuss the one part of your life once you've gone on to what in your mind are bigger and better and far more interesting. tangenting widely to try to make the point relevant to the 'artist' that is bill, one non-musician who fits that description above would be Hugh Grant ;-) i get the impression from the reviews/reports that bill considers himself to be an artist now, not a musician. that was what he did. now he does art/books/stuff
What they appear to fail to appreciate is that their actions during the time they were "The KEF" will continue to have an effect as people in that generation that listened to them move into the lime-light in their own right. What is more, they have left a body of work that will, rightly or wrongly, outlive them. (They probably feel wrongly, given the deletion of their back catalogue.)
q: how do other "famous name bands" feel about being inspirations for other bands? do any of them talk about it? this doesn't apply to those "really old bands" milking the public doing tours just for the $$$.
So it's OK for them to be heavily influenced by music and books (illuminatus trilogy) but if they happen to influence anyone via their music then that person is 'sad' and needs to get a life? Will someone ask Bill the
influence i think is fine. obsessing on tiny details of KLF lore/mythology isn't. funny thought: imagine some 23rd century archaeologist digging up KLF stuff and wondering about saint jimmy and bill and this moo moo stuff. funnier thought: same people but digging up scooter stuff :-)
following: If it wasn't for KLF fans, how many people would've turned up at The Barbican last time to see his shit?
the people who he wanted to see it - the fans who liked his current stuff?
Should any artist have this attitude?
i think its kind of fair for them to have the attitude. i would guess that most muso's dont like continually being compared to their early works, or constantly being associated with the same old work. seems fair enough. its not like its a life or death matter if we never really truely know about love trance/etc.
And should we respect it?
if they've specifically said they dont wish to discuss then yes. if its an open session q&a, then no. fair game. perhaps the thing we should do is hope that they run out of money and are forced/convinced to release extra footage enhanced director special icecream edition dvds/whatever.
