I'd second the recommendation of Boards of Canada, some really great tracks. Heard their album playing in a music shop on Hatton Gardens years ago and went straight to the counter and said "can I buy the album for whatever this is that's playing, and also, who is it?"

I was going to recommend FC Kahuna and Royksopp, but not sure if they're classed as ambient? But some tracks are great to listen to and chill out, as it were, so I always think of them as ambient.

Also, I've really been getting into Urgess' music recently. Not really ambient though, but might be worth checking out if you're looking for something different than usual, he seems to churn out tracks that are across a whole range of styles. At the least, the Spiderman theme is worth listening to for a chuckle if nothing else :)

There's also the ambient-ish "Trancentral Mix" of Depeche Mode's "Policy of Truth", which is usually seen as the "other" KLF remix from 1990.  Careful, though, the US CD mis-labels the mix, and I think the only CD that actually features it properly is the UK LCDBONG19.

As far as other ambient bands are concerned, I am a huge Boards of Canada fan - a duo that have a similar air of mystery and vociferous internet following to the KLF.  Start with their "proper" debut 'Music Has The Right To Children'.  But be careful of anything that claims to be by them from before 1996 (early EPs, etc.)  They tend to be internet fakes.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exnbfHq2P1c
