As John mentioned that 008R and the rest of the PT series seem different, I thought I'd fish out a copy and compare them myself (it's Chelsea v Man Utd on Sky Sports 1 so I might as well)... Items chosen: KLF008R - genuine copy with gold "APPEARING" sticker on sleeve that gives details of the late Scott Piering. KLF005R - genuine first release (i.e. not the 1991 re-issue) with big fat 'THE UK MIXES' sticker on sleeve. The idea of using these two is that the sleeves and labels should - in theory - have been produced around the same time... Right, first - the sleeves: First thing I notice is that the PT5 sleeve has actually been printed rotated by 90 degrees. Laying the 005R sleeve down so I'm looking at the big number '2', the gap for the vinyl to slide in is at the top and the spine writing runs along the bottom fold. With 008R, laying it so the big '5' is the right way up means that the opening is on the right-hand side and the spine writing is along the left edge. The next thing is obvious and has been mentioned numerous times - to match up with 005R, the 008R sleeve should have had a pink background and a black number 5. While this seems inconsistent, 004T was black/green and 004R was black/yellow (as opposed to the expected green/black) and - without 006R and 007R to compare it against, it's difficult to say whether there was any proper relationship between sleeve colours and T/R releases. Next, as John mentioned, the font used on the 008R spine does not appear to be the usual 'Compacta' font and - intestingly - most of the other PT sleeves list the catalogue number as KLF 00nR whereas 008R actually lists it as simply 'KLF 8R'. Of course, once again, KLF004R is actually listed as 'KLF4R' so it's difficult to say whether or not this is inconsistent or not. Lastly, the rear of the 008R sleeve has the Cat. No. as 'KLF008R' which actually follows the numbering convention of all but KLF004R (which has 'KLF4R' instead). Onto the vinyl itself: 008R has 'KLF 8R A1' and 'PR-P' etched on side A and 'KLF 8R B1' and 'PR-P' etched on side B. The 1's are small but aren't subscript (as in some pressings), there are no hyphens between the KLF and 8R and A1/B1 and the etchings are handwritten rather than machine stamped. 005R has 'KLF-005-R-A1' and 'ADRENALIN' etched on side A and 'KLF-005-R-B1' and 'ADRENALIN' etched on side B. Again, the 1's are small but are not subscript. The etchings are handwritten rather than machine stamped but as these records were pressed at different plants it seems pointless to try to analyze this further. Finally, the labels: My copies show no big differences. There are some minor differences (the Pyramid Blaster logo is smaller on 005R) but this is probably down to typesetting/printing issues. One point of note is that 008R lists the tracks as A SIDE REMIX 1 and B SIDE REMIX 2 whereas 005R simply lists all four tracks and then uses either '(THIS SIDE)' or '(OTHER SIDE)' to distinguish which is where. Also, under the 'Writers' item, 005R simply has 'THE KLF' whereas 008R has "W. DRUMMOND/J. CAUTY" - these are (almost) reversed for the 'Producers' item. 008R is listed as 'KLF 008R' under 'Catalogue Number' (you might expect it to be simply 'KLF 8R'). Comment has been made that 008R has "GO TO SLEEP" listed under 'OTHER DATA' while the other PT releases have 'WELCOME TO THE TRANCE' - as I'm comparing 008R to 005R I'll not comment on this. There we go. Pointless exercise or an interesting diversion into KLF vinyl - you decide... Chris
