Bill Drummond was going to cut off his hand, and throw into the audience of the 1992 Brits award, but ultimately he decided against it. They dumped a dead sheep on the steps of the Grosvenor Hotel in London (where the after-ceremony part was) instead. Actually, the KLF's actual appearance at
the show that night involved Bill using crutches, which might suggest that
a foot was also in the running for the chop - to coin a phrase! Here's a pic of him on that night: http://www.virginmedia.com/images/klf-431x300.jpg. And a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CDButf0go8
As far as Irish legends ho - I think you mean the Red Hand of Ulster. It's
not something I'm much of an expert on, although Bill was brought up a staunch Presbyterian (his father was a minister) and I think all of these stories type of stories, matryrdom and the like, were very much part of his childhood.
The link at the top of the page is for a Google search that may help.

I once read an article that one of the guys from the KLF planned to cut off his foot and throw it into the audience at a concert (presumably at the brit awards). he was inspired to do so by some irish legend. unfortunately, I cannot find anything about that in the internet now. can someone guide me in the right direction please?
