Alas, it was the other Dave who got in by turning his firewall off. I'd never try that...
I use Norton Personal Firewall, kept bang up to date twice weekly.
Windows already drives me insane... I think I'm going to have to buy my own Windows 2000 CD and put DOS 6.2 on the drive first so I can control it at need.
Linux would indeed similarly drive me nuts -- why are they so fascinated with the command line? This isn't 1992 -- but before much longer there'll be Linux systems that run completely graphically. Give it 3-5 years and half of us will be using it. I bet you. I bet you anything.
I still smell Bill Gates (BO problem, I heard) underneath all this. It might even be something to do with 2000 (un-bastardized, unlike the version of it on here) being better than the other versions, therefore things don't always work so well with it. My ISP won't, for example.

You don't need IIS (Internet Information Services) as that's only of use if you want to *run* an FTP site or web server; not if you want to use one. If you can access email (which you can, obviously) and the Internet then you have enough components installed to be able to access an FTP site. You've already proved this as you can access RM's site without Zone Alarm running. You may want to consider switching firewall - I use "Sygate Personal Firewall" and it comes with a set of sensible rules as standard (that said, most people I know swear by Zone Alarm).
If you're a hardened Linux user then that's probably the best solution, if not - I'd stick to Windows as having to dig around shell scripts all night will probably drive you insane...

I tried that with my own firewall, and it still didn't work. I believe it's something to do with Windows. I'm using 2000 Professional, but on a made-for-me system CD. (First time I've not used a full Windows CD, against my best instincts.)
I suspect there are optional components that aren't installed; something called 'Internet Information Services' isn't there, and that includes 'web and ftp support'. That may or may not be really necessary, but I bet I'm looking in the right direction.
I reckon I'm on my last version of Windows now, and will probably switch to Linux in due course.
(Don't anybody post the word 'Macs' to this list, or I will find out where they live, and they will have regrets.)

With Zone Alarm you'll need to enable FTP traffic (TCP Port
21) to and
from RM's server. That way you'll still be firewalled but can access his server.

On Thu, 22 Jan 2004 11:10:56 -0700, "RMStringer" <RMStringer@peoplepc.com> invaded my consciousness with the following:
This is the only way for people to get access to my ftp. Go to http://www.klf.de/home/ and look at the Gray Banner for my ftp details. Please for the sake of the list and me having to answer all the LOG in questions all the time, please go to http://www.klf.de/home/ and get the info yourself. Thankx,
RMStringer
I finally got in! It was someone's suggestion that you could use reget or some such that prompted me to try with my download manager, Flashget. Had to work out how to turn off PASV, then I had to shutdown Zone Alarm, because it refused to let me have a directory listing until I did. I'll have to work on that. Do you have a static IP? I may be able to put your IP in my trusted zone. I hope I didn't manage to do anything to break any rules while I was experimenting.
