Not sure what it's called exactly but a while back you could purchase a contraption for about £2000.00 that 'read' original vinyl records and 'copied' them by etching or pressing onto a 'blank' 12" disc. Not sure if such copies differ greatly from the original disc or not, but it's a much easier way to bootleg something than locating the original plates.
