i did EQ (small) tuning on ear w/o using any graph just like they did in old days it's what i learnt in school and also heard from other sound engineers - these days people are doing stuff depending on how it looks on screen, graphs not so much on ear. you have to hear it not see it. regarding compression. it helps to bring out many things out of the mix so it's not bad to use it. i used SSL based Glue Compressor with parallell compression so it won't be smashed and leaves much from original dynamics. i dislike brickwalled sounds unless it's a part of concept like i did in my Black Room reinterpretations.
