Unfortunately, Paul, that's a bit too technical for me.  Can you explain a more join-the-dots way, for instance: how do I set up a winrar file of mp3s?

I would still recommend using a program like QuickPar to create recovery files in case a track is unreadable.
 
My usual method of archiving is to store the files as a multiple WinRar archive (uncompressed), the use QuickPar to make recovery files.  If one of the archive files become unreadable for some reason, QuickPar will be able to recreate the file and all is good.
