he's right, there is no 'opinion' or 'i think' about the sham that is the US election. I cant be arsed to explain why but if you really wanna know check out michael moore's stupid white men. Its bollox, as are most elections. Say only 40% of people go to vote and only 25% of them vote for the party that 'wins', right thats 25% putting like 100 people in charge of millions of us! Everybody who has an opinion on what is and isn't on-topic, or just what is generally acceptable on this list, should look here: http://www.studio-nibble.com/lists/guidelines.html These are Lazlo's own guidelines, and even though he no longer actively moderates this list, he is still the kind provider of the service we all use, and as such HIS opinions are the ones we need to bow to most. And hey people, if you disagree with what Lazlo's posted, don't come back ranting to the list with 500 words of hyperbole over freedom of expression or whatever. Just say to yourself "those guidelines don't apply to me, I'm special" and continue as you always have. We don't expect any better from you anyway. Michael

Cauty, via Blacksmoke is making political statements via his music. The discussion has been about artists and if they should or shouldnt be making political statements (or at least trying to push their opnions on us) and if the consumer has to put up with it or not. While the discussion was not solely regarding Blacksmoke the two are related. I would consider Blacksmoke a political band. However, someone posting a lengthy article about how Bush allowed the 9-11 attacks to happen to forward his megalomaniac agenda has nothing to do with Blacksmoke, the KLF, music or anything. Heres something new then. The point is, for years artists of various kinds have not had the freedom of expression that they have now (its not completely liberal now but more so than 10 years ago). In the late 80's we had NWA's Fuck The Police thing and the Public Enemy Professor Griff thing as well as Pepsi pussying out of the Madonna deal. Then in the 90's we had the 2 Live Crew case, Ice T's Copkiller thing and the Bill Hicks' final Letterman appearance being cut. People still blame artists for all sorts of thing but the authorities havnt got the same power to censor (or at least they dont do it so often) as they used to. The "Judas Priest Suicide" case wouldnt get the time of day in the year 2003. Apart from the attempted censoring of Moore's "Stupid White Men" I cant think of a recent one and in the end it still got released, as did "Smack My Bitch Up", as did Manson's and Eminem's new records. So after all the shit over the last 40 years, I think artists should be allowed to say whatever they want.

A MOMENT OF SILENCE, BEFORE I START THIS POEM Before I start this poem, I'd like to ask you to join me In a moment of silence In honor of those who died in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon last September 11th. I would also like to ask you To offer up a moment of silence For all of those who have been harassed, imprisoned, disappeared, tortured, raped, or killed in retaliation for those strikes, For the victims in both Afghanistan and the U.S. And if I could just add one more thing... A full day of silence For the tens of thousands of Palestinians who have died at the hands of U.S.-backed Israeli forces over decades of occupation. Six months of silence for the million and-a-half Iraqi people, mostly children, who have died of malnourishment or starvation as a result of an 11-year U.S. embargo against the country. Before I begin this poem, Two months of silence for the Blacks under Apartheid in South Africa, Where homeland security made them aliens in their own country. Nine months of silence for the dead in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Where death rained down and peeled back every layer of concrete, steel, earth and skin And the survivors went on as if alive. A year of silence for the millions of dead in Vietnam - a people, not a war - for those who know a thing or two about the scent of burning fuel, their relatives' bones buried in it, their babies born of it. A year of silence for the dead in Cambodia and Laos, victims of a secret war ... ssssshhhhh.... Say nothing ... we don't want them to learn that they are dead. Two months of silence for the decades of dead in Colombia, Whose names, like the corpses they once represented, have piled up and slipped off our tongues. Before I begin this poem. An hour of silence for El Salvador ... An afternoon of silence for Nicaragua ... Two days of silence for the Guatemaltecos ... None of whom ever knew a moment of peace in their living years. 45 seconds of silence for the 45 dead at Acteal, Chiapas 25 years of silence for the hundred million Africans who found their graves far deeper in the ocean than any building could poke into the sky. There will be no DNA testing or dental records to identify their remains. And for those who were strung and swung from the heights of sycamore trees in the south, the north, the east, and the west... 100 years of silence... For the hundreds of millions of indigenous peoples from this half of right here, Whose land and lives were stolen, In postcard-perfect plots like Pine Ridge, Wounded Knee, Sand Creek, Fallen Timbers, or the Trail of Tears. Names now reduced to innocuous magnetic poetry on the refrigerator of our consciousness ... So you want a moment of silence? And we are all left speechless Our tongues snatched from our mouths Our eyes stapled shut A moment of silence And the poets have all been laid to rest The drums disintegrating into dust.
