With the arrival of 24hr transmission, there was a deep, dark TV void that the ABC wanted filled. ABC producer Mark Fitzgerald had Rage in mind. His idea? An all night music video show which would play the video, the whole video and nothing else. No presenters, no distractions, no interruptions. Well, virtually no interruptions. There were of course those distinctive r-r-r-r-r-r-r-rage screams which - love or hate them - seem to have become part of our collective subconscious. With the arrival of Rage, an Australian tradition developed. It's a tradition of bleary eyed Australians sitting on their couches at 4:00 am thinking "I'll just watch one more, then I'm going to bed... just one more...just one more..." The guest programmers entered Rage's late night landscape in 1990. Mark Fitzgerald, producer/ programmer Stephanie Lewis, and musician Damien Lovelock had thrown the idea around for a while. In January 1990 the idea finally hit the screen. Rage guest programmers were handed the show for a night. They would host Rage, choose all the music and explain their choices. It was a concept that went against the idea of interruption-free music videos, but guest programmers seemed an interruption worth having. Since 1990, Rage has been asking influential musicians to choose the music which has most influenced them. Certain songs just kept appearing on their guest lists. Not surprisingly, they were often songs with great videos, but they were more than that. They were important, beautiful, powerful, inventive, groundbreaking songs. In early, 1998 we decided to look back at the programming lists and collect a list of the songs most chosen. Hi, Stuart, If you're new to the list, welcome. I'm sure Rob or someone can explain more fully about the ftp server he provides, but if you're not so keen on file downloading, I can only suggest that you stay on the list, and things will appear (fan-made productions, etc) that you can purchase from time to time. There's also people swapping on the list a lot of the time too. Most of us are friendly, big fans of the KLF (of course) and all have the collecting bug, so if you stick around the mailing list, you should be able to get some interesting and rare things. Also, sometimes, despite scarey stories of hugely expensive records, even some of the "ordinary" rarities (not the 6-copies-only promo stuff) can be gotten quite cheaply. There's a copy of the "What Time is Love Story" CD on Ebay at the moment, if you want to grab one of the more coveted KLF albums. Good luck! White Room movie

Hello, I fear this may be a common message on this list, but I'm keen to track down KLF audio, plus the White Room movie. I recall the Mancentral archive used to house a lot of material, but sadly I never made full use of it before its demise. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Stuart

IMHO, the first 3 are the best. The rest is not that good... I've always bought the enigma albums without first listening to them. Btw, the DVD "remember the future" is also worth buying. KLF alternative history ... discuss

Hi, folks, Simple question. What if the KLF had remained the KLF, with Brits awards split or K-Foundation money-burning, what would their career have been like? Suppose "The Black Room" had appeared in summer 1992, would it have anticipated the Prodigy's "Fat of the Land" five years early - or would it have just crashed commercially? Would things like "The White Room Movie" and the 1989 demos have gotten proper releases? Any more singles from "The White Room" (say "No More Tears")? Would Bill and Jimmy gone into producing other bands in a major way? Would their music have gone into "progressive" or "intelligence" house? Would they have continued releasing records with diminishing commercial results (like other big early 1990s rave acts) before experiening a commercial renaissance around 1996 (like the Prodigy, Leftfield and Orbital?) Box set? What do people think?

Each of the bands you list have, of course, done excellent stuff - but Aphex Twin released "Drukqs" (sp?), Orbital released "The Saint", Prodigy released "Baby's Got a Temper" (which were all shite) and the Orb - at cerain times - has seemed nothing more than a re-release machine. In my opinion anyway - maybe people disagree. The KLF's output in 1997 maybe hints at what might have happened had they trundled on in the intervening years: 2K's "**** the Millennium" bombed, not really because of the unbroadcastable "fucks", but more because the record was an uncommercial, short-term nostalgic muddled mess, brimming with too many (very old and retread) musical ideas (like the Prod's "Baby's Got a Temper" in 2002). Then we had the semi-official "Waiting for the Rights of Mu" - a mispelled titled, badly proof-read liner notes ("1980" rather than "1990" etc), the very beginning of "Waiting" cut off the soundtrack, and of course music that was already seven years old. Let's be honest, neither release boded well for any "new" KLF material, and I'm sure deep down we're all glad that what we have now is (mostly) lovingly made fan stuff, rather than badly made or artistically tired official product. Knowing when to stop is the trick. Was 1997 the sound of B&J beginning to jump the shark, I wonder?
