Since we're all in a "White Room" demos wonderland this evening, can I just ask what people think of OTHER great unreleased albums of rock history? Here, I'm thinking of the Beatles' "Get Back" or the Beach Boys' "Smile" ... both of which have been heavily bootlegged, but have never had an official release (and like certain Pure Trance rarities, suffer from the curse of some "were they or weren't they actually recorded" questions from time to time). What are other people's favourite "lost" albums? John Not a Scot, just Scott-ish PS - The first person to mention the original Troy Tate version of the Smiths' debut album wins a promo copy of 1989's "Love Trance" CD single (KLF006CD) lol.

Lame question: on the first Fortran 5 CD, right on the first track there is a sample from A:WTIL (crowd noise, laughing & stuff), then a guy says: "Maybe one guy in this business knows anything about music. Go ahead, ONE guy! And I don't care who is it. <unintelligible> anything good or anything bad. It's all the matter of opinion." Was it a reference to one of our guys, or not? Did The KLF just used a crwod sample which was out in the public? Post-1997 Genaside II: Ad Finité (it's actually their second album, but still a killer) Shivaree: I Oughtta Give You A Shot In The Head For Making Me Live In This Dump (The first album, the best songs. Their second CD is all good too.) I think not too many groundbreaking albums (especially in electronica) were made after 1997, but that's just my opinion. You can't better what has been done once. Not even the Prodigy can repeat themselves. The only good albums were made by artists who didn't make as much money as once revelative cahrt-topper acts. The Prodge boys did it with "Experience", which was fast but still had proper songs. Their second LP is just a re-make of the first, with guitars dropped in. The third is just shit. I mostly buy singles nowadays, but very few albums. I could listen to "Sometimes" from Les Rhytmes Digitales, but a full CD full of that soft-sounding, French-made electronica...no, thanks. I don't like Air and Daft Punk for the same reason. It's not hard, it's mellow. Non-1997: For me the post-KLF-era's biggest faves were the second Sheep On Drugs LP, the first Prodigy, the first Portishead (+all Dummy era singles). There are others but that would be far too offtopic. Ebay curios and curioser

Some thoughts ... Isn't it rather dangerous that KLF fans seem to be getting a bit of a reputation in e-bay circles (a very limited amount of people, admitedly) for buying counfeit (or at least suspicious) goods for huge amounts of money? The arguments about the www.brandnew.co.uk mix was just the tip of the iceberg. Things like "This is What the KLF is About" video, "Lost Sounds of Mu 2" and "White Room Soundtrack" regularly go for quite large amounts of money. Everyone knows they're bootlegs - but bid like crazy anyway. Even I'm guilty of that, with the "Pure Trance" CD album, that turned up on e-bay a few weeks ago (I bid $150 but didn't win). Two weeks later, I got an unsolicited e-mail from an e-bay member, offering me another copy (not through e-bay) for the same amount - $150. When I e-mailed back saying I might bid if he put it up for auction, he replied that he would put it up as "buy it now" for $150! It was then I finally e-mailed him saying that I now believed it was a bootleg, and therefore completely worthless (other than the cost of the CDR, paper for the sleeve, and the five minutes spent burning it). He never replied to that one. I'm sure fans of other groups don't bid huge amounts for a bootleg 7" of Nirvana's "Love Buzz" or the Beatles' "Yesterday and Today" on CDR (but maybe I'm wrong). I sometimes wonder if there's a group of about four or five bootleggers around the world ("The Five"?), who have access to all the real KLF rarities, and just churn out another copy whenever they want a new house. Cynical and over-exaggerated, I know - but shouldn't KLF fans make a stand against these bootlegs (particularly when the e-bayers in question seem to be taking the piss) BY SIMPLY NOT BUYING THEM? Of course, this whole situation is partly due to the rumours and legends that surround Our Favourite Band, and partly due to the fact Our Favourite Band are old fools, who seem to believe that driving round the M25 (yeah! London! Centre of the Universe!) playing out-dated techno-rock (the Black Smoke Organisation are a bit 1997, really, aren't they?) is more interesting than a time when their music was on every radio in the UK and they didn't have grey hair or scatalogical mates. Therefore, they do not re-release their back catalogue - indeed, seem to hold their fans in contempt. Without doubt, the fact that they are prepared to watch people spend hundreds of pounds/Euros/dollars/yen etc. on records that cost a fraction of that when first released (they will know of the prices their records go for now, for sure), and STILL refuse to even considera re-release of some of their back catalogue, just goes to show that they are probably, deep down, self-obsessed berks. On the other hand, it's a free country, and people can what they like, I suppose. Now ... where's that copy of "Turn up the Strobe" I have in the attic ...? ;-) John PS - Yes, I know, I know, there's a war on. The 4 different 20 minute mini versions of Chill Out are very nice. I really like some of the samples that didn't make it into the final cut. Enigma, Chris Isaac, the rave party bust... The first of the four is my favorite of all. A lot of people have mentioned hearing mixes on MP3 mislabeled as the Chill Out Megamix. The original UK promo version of Lionrock's "City Delirious" is much better than final release in my opinion. It sounds much more like "An Instint For Detection" which is why I like it. It's difficult to find, but not impossible. The White Room demo cassette

I used to have a copy. I got it from a second hand record shop in Dundee in 1995. The paper cover was yellow, with a cartoon of the KLF on the front - the same one of them in their "It's Grim" jackets that's on some of the "This is What the KLF ..." videos you see on e-bay. The tape itself was a BBC cassette (I don't think the BBC makes blank tapes any more), with nothing written on it. Obviously a boot, but I have no idea where it came from. It was part of a huge lot of KLF items, including Pete Robinson's book, "The What Time is Love Story" LP, "Madrugada Eterna" 1-side 12", and "1987", which had just been handed in. One side of the cassette contained shaky versions of the "White Room" demos, in the same order as all the "White Room" soundtrack CDs. The second side included "3 AM Eternal (SSL Demo)", "It's Grim Up North (028T mix)", "KLF DMC Minimix", "What Time is Love? (Wandaful mix)" and various "What Goes On?"s.
