GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. As most of you know, we have a volunteer Search & Rescue Team here. Part of the duties of the SAR team is boating education. The team has put together three upcoming trainings. Below is a list of the trainings and the information about them. All training is free with the minor exception of First Aid/CPR. All classes are taught at the Great Salt Lake Marina over at the marina office/shop building (Building C). Please RSVP to ryan.schilder@utah.edu FIRST AID/CPR - Sunday, April 13th at 1pm Learn basic First Aid and CPR. This is a four hour class. Once you complete the class you will receive your American Heart Association First Aid/CPR/AED card. Cost of the class is free. Cost of the card is $5.00 Bring paper/pencil and a writing pad. Limit of 20 students for this seminar. Radio Communication / Radio Etiquette / Rules of the Road When Boats Meet in the Deep Channel-Marina Mouth - Sunday, April 27th, at 1pm What is proper radio communication on the lake? How is the best way to contact the Harbor Master or Emergency Services if I am in trouble? What is the best radio to own? How can a rocking boat limit transmission range? What is proper radio etiquette on a marine band radio? What are the rules of the road when boats meet in the Deep Channel or in the marina mouth? This is a two hour Seminar. The course is free of charge. There is no student limit. Bring your own handheld marine band radio if you have one. Basic Navigation / GPS Operations / Lake Familiarization - Saturday, May 10th, at 1pm What is Latitude and Longitude? How to read a Great Salt Lake Chart How does a GPS work? What is a waypoint? What is a route? What is a track? Where are the currents on Great Salt Lake? What direction do they head? How do the currents affect my sailing? Where are the reefs? Where are some safe harbors (anchorages)? Where are some good daytime and nighttime anchorages? This is approximately a three to four hour seminar which may include a practical either on the water or on land. Bring a handheld GPS if you have one.
