I have very sad news of the passing of a good friend of mine and the marina community. Clint Baty, an avid sailor, advocate, and my predecessor as Harbor Master of Great Salt Lake Marina died on February 20th after a brief illness. Clint was born in Moab, Utah on April 27, 1934 and served in the Navy, stationed in Europe during the Korean War. He found his home on the Great Salt Lake in the early 1970's and was a fixture here until 1998 when he retired. During that time he worked as the Ranger Sailboat dealer and taught sailing introducing many people to the sport of sailing and Great Salt Lake before becoming the first Harbor Master on Great Salt Lake. Besides sailing his other passion was running and golf. I remember him often spending his lunch hours running from the marina to the old truck stop located near Rocky Mountain Raceway. There are many of us who have wonderful and colorful stories of Clint, including him racing on Great Salt Lake when he was racing his Merit 25 and losing his keel. We had many racing duels with him on is Olson 30 WEST SECOND SOUTH while I was racing on AVALANCHE, a Hobie 33. During his last few years as Harbor Master he, Ann Hunter, and I worked closely together on the birth of SAILFEST; An event he envisioned celebrating the sport of sailing as well as this wonderful inland sea he loved. That event still occurs every year and is a lasting tribute to Clint. He and I also worked closely on search-and-rescue cases during that time. He had a vast knowledge of Great Salt Lake and its history and was always a joy to talk to. And he dearly loved to tell stories of his adventures on Great Salt Lake. He would often return here to visit the lake he loved and see old friend. He always loved telling stories of the glory days of Great Salt Lake. Clint lived in American Fork and was married to Jane Barratt for the last 23 years of his life. He is survived by seven children, twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. I remember Clint well. As a youth, he was a god of sailing on GSL. He always seemed to be on the best side of the course when racing and always had a smile at the end of a day. He was a very good sailor and left a lasting impact on the community. Quoting Dave Shearer <dshearer@gslmarina.com>:

Clint was the first person I met at the harbor. All of my association with the GSL is descended from that chance meeting. Clint was warm, friendly, and encouraging. Once, I had the privilege of assisting him with a search and rescue during a Tooele Twister. Everybody got back to the harbor safe and sound thanks to Clint’s dedication, professionalism, and deep knowledge of our inland sea. I will truly mourn his passing. Dave, our deepest condolences to Clint's family, and the marina community who knew and loved him. Clint was the first person that I met, in my drive from San Francisco, back to Toronto, after accepting a position with a former employer on the west coast. However, after a great conversation with Clint, followed by a sail on Catalina 22 from a few new friends I made that evening, our plans changed, and my wife and I decided to make the GSL our new home for our Mirage 27. Between the floods of 1982, when I bought Clint's old GMC truck to get out to the marina, Clint's visiting with us in our home for my big 40, our friendship and experiences together deepened. I remember our being the committee boat at the north end of the GSL when Clint and Joy took a knock-down on the Governor's Cup, between Antelope and Fremont Islands. The hull of Joy's Olsen 24 was split, allowing significant flooding on one tack, manageable water intake on the other tack. As Clint passed around us, Joy was calling for a rescue, while Clint, at the helm felt he could safely return to the marina. The final outcome was that the Rescue One of that time came out with pumps to pull Clint, Joy, their crew and the Olsen off Standsbury Island, where, in wisdom, it was beached. Stories of that saga abounded for years after that. Clint later invited me to crew with him on a number of occasions, resulting in some of the wettest and most enjoyable rides that I have had on the Great Salt Lake. Those memories are some of the best that I have of good times on the GSL. We had a standing joke that if I ever fell overboard and was lost on the lake, he would make sure that Renata would be in good hands.. Clint was one of the strongest supporters for saving the marina, in the turbulent 1980's when the existence of the marina was in question at times in the record high waters when the breakwaters were washed out. He lobbied very strongly for the strategic role that the marina represented on a number of aspects, and supported us behind the scenes in our battle with Kennecott over their emission problems of the late 80's, which were finally resolved with the new smelter and monitoring system. Later, as Captain, along with Steve Ingram on the Island Serenade, Clint safely brought tens of thousands of visitors to discover the miracle of the Great Salt Lake. I will always also remember him in his sailing whites on one of the stellar dinner cruises that we joined him for. As a park ranger, master mariner, and a truly good friend, Clint will be missed by both myself and Renata, as I am sure by the many other people whom he touched.. (and saved on the Great Salt Lake ). Clint, I trust you are enjoying your time at the helm, in the great sailing grounds in the heavens. I remember Clint when he ran the old A Frame Visitor Center. This was before there was a marina or boat ramp. The Yacht Club had permission from the State to build ten slips for their charter members. My partner and I kept our Venture 21 at a dock between the University's geology boats and the Yacht Club. Clint kept quiet about our trespass. He would help us launch our boat when we backed as fast as we could and hit the brakes when we were as far into the mud as we dared go. The boat would slide off the trailer into the mud and Clint would help us slide it into the water. When we went into the A Frame to buy munchies for our sail, Clint always had stories to tell. We were never sure whether or not they were accurate but it didn't matter. His stories were always good ones. My memories of Clint will always be good ones. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Shearer" <dshearer@gslmarina.com> To: gsl-marina@mailman.xmission.com, "Laurie Stickler" <chucklauriestickler@gmail.com> Sent: Friday, March 3, 2017 9:05:14 AM Subject: [GSL-Marina] SAD NEWS! Clint was a great man, sailor and an amazing friend! I was honored to race with him a few times and most of all to help him and Dave Shearer bring about Sailfest! He was classy guy and wanted Waterford crystal bowls for the Sailfest trophies. He was a loved by all the sailing community and always had great stories to tell. A legacy sailor gone but never forgotten! RIP Clint!
