ACTION ALERT: Help Us Stop Bear River & Lake Powell Pipeline Funding Tuesday
See below – we all need to be very vocal with our Senators and Representatives to stop these pipelines – the GSL currently receives 50% of it’s water from run-off, and of that 50%, 60% comes from the Bear River. If this Pipeline goes through, the GSL WILL LOSE 60% of the water it currently receives from run-off. We have fought very hard to get our marina dredged – but dredging will not matter, if there is no water in the lake. PLEASE write to the Senators & Representatives on the tax committee – in addition, let YOUR Legislators know that you are in their district and are watching how they vote on this bill. And if you can show up to the Capitol on February 23 – that would be greatly appreciated (not necessarily to speak, just to show that there is a presence of people opposed to these pipelines). House Bill 257 would do the EXACT same thing SB 80 does, word for word. Just like SB 80, HB 257 would take $36 million in sales taxes every year to fund the Lake Powell Pipeline and Bear River Development. This shows your legislators have heard your concerns with SB 80 and the water development lobbyists are looking for another way to sneak through the same bill under a different name. We need you to tell your legislators<http://utahrivers.us12.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=3e86be07a004e70a601c3568a&id=5a7ad87bb0&e=dcfa30af24> to not be tricked by the water development lobby and to vote NO on HB 257. Good News! Two Good Bills for Utah's Rivers Have Passed the Legislature! Senate Concurrent Resolution 1, which encourages water suppliers with unmetered secondary water to install meters has passed the House and Senate. SCR 1 is a good step forward because secondary water users are some of the most wasteful water users since most of them have no way of telling how much water they use. The other good bill, SB 28, which requires water suppliers in Utah to implement inclining water rate structures, has also passed both houses. Inclining rate structures charge wasteful water users more for their use and reward conscientious water users with lower water rates, promoting free-market water conservation.
