At 8:00 am Thursday morning, February 4, 2016 - the Senate will once again be voting on SB80 - which will be a disaster for the Great Salt Lake. We all know, all to well, the shrinking size of the GSL. Allowing the Bear River Project to continue will mean certain death for the Great Salt Lake. The Great Salt Lake currently receives 50% of it's water from run-off, and of that 50% runoff, 60% comes from the Bear River. Allowing the Bear River Pipeline and Project to be built will mean certain death for the Great Salt Lake and all of the habitat that depends on it. It will not matter how much marina dredging we do, if the lake has no water in it. SO ALL YOU EARLY RISERS - PRIOR TO 8:00 am - please email your Senator and Representatives and ask them to VOTE NO on SB80 providing Infrastructure Funding for the Bear River Project. You can find out who your Senator and Representatives are, with all their contact info at www.le.utah.gov<http://www.le.utah.gov> (you can email them, text them, or call them) - before 8:00 am, Thursday Feb 4 will be the most effective. Make sure you sign your name and home address, so they know you are one of their constituents. Below is what I wrote to my Senator & Representative: As a constituent, I am asking that you vote NO on SB 80 which provides infrastructure funding for the Bear River Project and the Lake Powell Pipeline. We should be ashamed of ourselves for the way Utah treats the environment - our filthy air, our careless regard for water, destroying rivers, giving certain death to not only the Great Salt Lake, the very lake our city is named after, but also the very precious bird habitats, and the billion dollar brine shrimp industry - why should Mother Nature take care of us - when we refuse to take care of her? I would urge you to educate yourself on the stories you are being told. Even Governor Herbert in his budget recommendations encourages education before water development. Governor Herbert stated "Out of respect to the taxpayer, it is recommended that the State of Utah only allocate very scarce general fund resources to financing major water projects after all other alternatives are exhausted (similar to how other budget requests are treated) and the significant concerns raised in the recent legislative audit on water are resolved". Are you aware that the Legislative audit of the Division of Water Resources showed the sloppy and misleading statistics used? The Utah water usage figures included figures for the water consumption of people living in Saratoga Springs NEW YORK instead of Saratoga Springs Utah. Certainly not an accurate report we were given, more of a scare tactic, trying to get people to "react" not "think". Please start by educating yourself at www.utahrivers.org<http://www.utahrivers.org> and www.fogsl.org<http://www.fogsl.org> [http://fogsl.org/images/stories/gslmap.jpg]<http://www.fogsl.org/> Friends of Great Salt Lake - Latest News & Updates<http://www.fogsl.org/> www.fogsl.org FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake works to preserve and protect the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem and to increase public awareness and appreciation of the lake through education ... Utah lowers the price of water by collecting property taxes on homes and businesses, encouraging waste.
