GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. I can't remember when I had such a huge response on one of our programs. Not even the field trips garnered as much enthusiasm as we received about doing a Star Gazing program at the marina. I have been working with our Naturalist and I think we have worked out a nice program for you. In fact, because of the response, we have worked out a "two-fer" (two for the price of one). Two nights of star gazing with different themes. FRIDAY, June 15th Sailing Astronomy. Meet with the Antelope Island/GSL Marina Naturalist at 9pm at the Great Salt Lake Marina for an evening learning about our starry night. This is "un-aided eye" astronomy, what you might gaze at and see while you are sailing, or sprawled out on a blanket looking up at the sky. We will talk about how big space is, the life of a star, and other night sky topics. We will then talk about and learn how to identify several summer constellations and many of the stories behind them. SATURDAY, June 16th Our Solar Neighborhood: Planets and other objects within our Solar System. Earth is just one of the many objects orbiting our sun. What else is out there and just how big it is? Join our Park Naturalist at 9pm at the Great Salt Lake Marina to gaze through telescopes into the vastness of space at some of our solar system neighbors. If you have a telescope you would like to set up, feel free to bring it. Oh, and these star events are being held during SAILFEST this year. So make a long weekend of it. Think cardboard boat races, cruises, kids activities, socials and more fun events along with this "two-fer" Star Party. Mark these important dates down on your calendar.
