LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
- ACTION ALERT: SB0234 Utah Inland Port Authority
Dear FRIENDS,
FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake echoes the following action alert composed by Great Salt Lake Audubon:
The
Utah Inland Port Authority Bill SB 234S01, which surfaced late in the 2018 session could override the existing Master Plan and would give the State the final decision on siting facilities for a global inland port in the Northwest
Quadrant (NWQ). Salt Lake City's NWQ Master Plan took years of public dialogue to finalize. It includes an important Natural Area that provides a critical buffer between development and the lands and wetlands along Great Salt Lake's shoreline that helps to
protect the millions of birds that depend on the Lake every year. The Master Plan also supports quality jobs and clean, high-tech light industry in the development zone. State control potentially could mean an oil tank farm or coal port based on legislative
discussion at the Capitol.
If you haven't been following this
fast developing story, here are some short articles, and editorial and a press release that give good background:

trade hub in northwest Salt Lake City gets few tweaks, but city leaders see more changes as it heads to Senate”

side residents, environment groups sound alarm over inland port bill”, Deseret News,
