We never know when, as of the 18th when a call to a good friend was a day too late... My Father Grant R. Fairbanks MD, Plastic Surgeon was a Colleague and good friend of Dave Dingman. As a kid, I only knew him from attending certain Dinner Parties. Yet, he knew Dave was not well and had hoped to call him before the Holidays. My father recalls their histories, who they did their different medical Residencies with, my father with Reed O. Dingman at Michigan (Reed was actually the one to develop the retractor). They both attended the University of Maryland during a General Surgery Residency, I was only a toddler (same year as the MLK riots). Ultimately, they both established their Practices in Salt Lake City. Whereas Dave had moved about, Sun Valley and St. George, he continued to fly after retirement. My father recalls flying with him and attending his lecture following the events of Everest. One should ask, "Is it better to have claimed the Summit for the Victory of One? Or, is it more honorable to have Saved the Lives of four, to his Name?" Peace to the Dingmans, Lance ________________________________ From: Dave Shearer <harbormaster@gslmarina.com> Sent: Thursday, December 30, 2021 3:33 PM To: F G <jfg100@yahoo.com> Cc: gsl-marina@mailman.xmission.com <gsl-marina@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: [GSL-Marina] Re: SAD NEWS Fred You are correct. He was an amazing man and very humble too. There are some great articles out there that talk about Dave. Although he did not summit Everest he got to about 1000 feet of the summit. He and his partner were the first to traverse Everest ascending up one route and descending the other route. He gave up his chance to summit the mountain in order to belay four other team members. https://www.tampabay.com/archive/2013/02/24/first-american-men-to-climb-everest-reunite/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tampabay.com%2Farchive%2F2013%2F02%2F24%2Ffirst-american-men-to-climb-everest-reunite%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cc4a50e54e6dd477c28f908d9cbe47a47%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637765004848390505%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=TjzlmVBjJoE4sUbkMqZ9uH6AvBllNLs7C1cUE6Fp58o%3D&reserved=0> https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/02/23/members-of-1st-us-team-to-top-everest-reunite/1940811/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.usatoday.com%2Fstory%2Fnews%2Fnation%2F2013%2F02%2F23%2Fmembers-of-1st-us-team-to-top-everest-reunite%2F1940811%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cc4a50e54e6dd477c28f908d9cbe47a47%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637765004848390505%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=AKzt6hmft9a1RfyWQ4Lyk2nBXsoTP0OSP29VEeGXkXw%3D&reserved=0> https://www.theactivetimes.com/vimeo-men-who-know-everest-best<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theactivetimes.com%2Fvimeo-men-who-know-everest-best&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cc4a50e54e6dd477c28f908d9cbe47a47%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637765004848390505%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=VwNshXd7zDH%2BGgtw%2FG1tDIvH8Pi4yVoBq9EQutiFe%2Fg%3D&reserved=0> https://www.outsideonline.com/2162776/lost-everest/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.outsideonline.com%2F2162776%2Flost-everest%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cc4a50e54e6dd477c28f908d9cbe47a47%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637765004848390505%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=ukCaDcCSkvGiD8l4pddy5yWAWA6ddYGp3MzK8dym6RQ%3D&reserved=0> https://vimeo.com/63102466<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fvimeo.com%2F63102466&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cc4a50e54e6dd477c28f908d9cbe47a47%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637765004848390505%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=aYra7ZSRRga9fj4BuolPKS3D2qio5On3e9adHwHpfDQ%3D&reserved=0> From: F G <jfg100@yahoo.com> Sent: Thursday, December 30, 2021 3:23 PM To: Dave Shearer <harbormaster@gslmarina.com> Cc: gsl-marina@mailman.xmission.com Subject: Re: [GSL-Marina] SAD NEWS He was also an innovative surgeon and developed the Dingman retractor which is a widely used device in cleft palate surgery. Dave Dingman passed away earlier this month. Dave led an incredible life. I remember racing against him many times on his boat DINGER, a Santa Cruz 27. Dave was an avid sailor, pilot, canoer and kayaker. He was also an avid mountain climber. In 1959 he led a team to be the first in history to scale both of Mt. McKinley’s twin peaks in the same day. He was also on the first American team to summit Mt Everest. He is credited with rescuing four climbers during the descent.
