Wow. I used to sail with Lou a lot back when I was a teen. Great guy and a good sailor.

Sad news today.  One of the Utah sailing community died July 10th.  Louis “Lou” Ma’te’ died at 100 years old in Lakeside, Montana.

 

Lou was born in Budapest Hungary on July 10th, 1922.  He was an avid skier and sailor.  He participated for Hungary in the 1948 Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland.  He escaped from Hungary during the Revolution in 1956 arriving in America on a boat January 31st, 1957.  He came to Salt Lake City to ski and stayed here.

 

Besides skiing he also loved sailboat racing and was active in both the Great Salt Lake Yacht Club and the Bear Lake Yacht Club.
