Wind and other stuff

Well it looks like we will still have wind today and tomorrow. But not quite as strong as the original prediction. It also looks like we will have off-and-on wind all next week. Please make sure your dock lines and other property are secure and ready for the fall/winter winds we usually get. If we do not have strong winds tomorrow, they will eventually happen. A quick trip to www.gslmarina.com<http://www.gslmarina.com> will show we get winds in excess of 80mph several times during these months. Be prepared. A couple other items that I hate to bring up but I feel that I must because some of them are costing the marina money that we just don't have during these tough budget times. 1. We have some people using the marina dumpsters to dump personal items from homes. This has caused our bills to go up for excess material. These dumpsters are here for the convenience of our slip renters and park patrons. But they are meant for normal trash from the use of recreating at the marina. They are more than adequate for the normal flow of trash we have. But bulk items should go to the land fill instead of the marina dumpsters. Lately we have had refrigerators, mattresses and other bulk items in them. 2. We have had some people fiddling with the sprinklers at night so they can have campfires late at night in the common fire pit. This has caused damage to sprinkler heads which has also cost extra money to the budget. If we need to adjust the time the sprinklers come on next spring to accommodate fires we can certainly do that. Come talk to us. 3. We continue to still see people using hoses with aluminum fittings. This has cost us A LOT OF money. These hoses are NOT ALLOWED. You must have brass fittings on the end of hoses. The water has been turned off for the year but remember when you bring hoses out this spring they MUST HAVE BRASS FITTINGS or they WILL BE REMOVED. 4. We have a couple slip renters (not a lot) demonstrating excessive speed in the marina. One recent incident had a slip renter going in excess of 50mph in the parking lot. The parking lot often has a lot of cars packed in tight. It only takes one kid jumping out from behind a parked car to have a tragic day. The speed limit in the marina is 15mph. A couple other notes: 1. We will leave the pump-a-head on through this weekend. Please use it this weekend if you need to dump your boats. If you have a boat with a draft of over 4 feet and need to dump your tanks, you probably won't make it over to the pump-a-head. That is ok because we have a portable tank for use. You can dump your tanks into our portable tank right in your slip and then dump them into the sewer vault. Please let me know if you are interested in this service so we can make the tank available for you. We will be winterizing that tank soon though. 2. The water is off to the docks now. If you need water the freeze less hydrants in the parking lot still work as well as the hydrant at the rescue dock. 3. The earthquake did a LOT of damage to the frontage road to the marina. We will be doing a large repair project to this road very soon. Unfortunately this may mean we will have to shut access to the marina for a couple days. We will do everything we can to minimize the time of any shutdown. I will know more on Tuesday about when and how long a shutdown may last. Please hope for precipitation. We need it! Thanks Dave

WEATHER WARNING!

I've been watching the models for a few days now and they are consistent. We are expected to experience a SERIOUS wind event this weekend. Is your boat ready? Are your dock lines up to the task? Is your property secured. Please take this warning seriously. We could see substantial wind gusts on Saturday if the models hold together and pan out. Dave

Tough Times

2020 has certainly been a tough year. COVID-19, an earthquake at the marina, horrible spring precipitation, silting, low lake levels, many boats stuck in the marina and budget constraints brought on by COVID-19. We are watching the 2020-2021 water year very closely. National Weather Service comes out with their long-range forecast at the end of each month. For the last two months the NWS forecast for this winter is the same . . . they don't know if the GSL drainage is going to be wet or dry this winter. They give us an equal chance for both. They feel pretty confident that Utah will be much drier than normal south of us and much wetter than normal just to the north of us. We are in the uncertain zone between these two zones. A link to their long-term forecasts can be found here<https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/90day/> Now for the tough reality. We can't afford to have a drier-than-normal winter. Nor can we afford to have a normal winter snowpack. We MUST have above normal precipitation to maintain a boating season for fixed keel boats. Much of the moisture and snowpack we receive this winter will be held in the mountain reservoirs to replete their lake levels. As an example here are the current percentages of lake levels in the GSL Drainage area: Pineview: 40% Causey: 36% Echo: 19% East Canyon: 57% Rockport: 43% Deer Creek: 60% Jordanelle (our bright spot): 73% I'm not trying to sound the alarm yet. According to water watch experts we can afford to have a dry October and even a dry November. But we can't lose December through April. Those are our critical months. Right now our snowpack, surprisingly, is 158% today with the Provo drainage being at 256%. Great Salt Lake gets 50% of its water from direct precipitation. The other 50% comes from spring runoff. Of that 50%, 20% comes from the Jordan River. 20% comes from the Weber/Ogden rivers. And 60% comes from the Bear River drainage. So we will be watching the Bear River snowpack (NW Uinta Mountains) very closely. Today that snowpack is 126%. If we can maintain 125% on the Bear and 125% for the whole drainage we should be ok for next year. If we don't we could be in serious trouble. Right now NOAA has all of Utah in the "Drought Persists" forecast through January 2021. This last snowpack season we started out gangbusters in October only to go dry in November. December through February were showing good numbers . . . Until COVID-19 and the Earthquake hit. Right after that we had some of the driest months on record. We lost March, April and May. So here is the reason for this email. I am watching the situation VERY closely this winter. If we end up having our snowpack drainage in the dry zone we may be back where we were five years ago and having to plan on pulling most, if not all, the boats from the marina again. I certainly hope this doesn't happen. But I feel I must at least explain where we are at this moment and what we need to see for a recovery. "Hope" is the key word now. National Weather Service is updating their long-term forecasts constantly. They are published at the end of each month. I have watched their forecasts closely for nearly 20 years now. And they are very often wrong. Predicting weather is not easy. There is some hope in other models. And some grim news. One bit of grim news is that very long term forecasters feel that we are heading for another dust bowl in the next several years as the West will see persistent droughts. Other forecast models indicate we may be going into a three to six year wet cycle. We can only watch and hope.

Turkey Fest

Unfortunately it looks unlikely we will be able to hold Turkey Fest this year. This greatly disappoints me as this has become the largest event at the marina and the second longest running. But with the current COVID numbers rising it doesn't look feasible. I haven't made the final decision yet. I will wait a few weeks more before making the final decision. Dave

Water to docks

Well, unfortunately this cold spell has forced us to turn the water off to the docks much sooner than we were hoping for. I, K and E still have water but that is likely to change in the next day or two. We will winterize the pump-a-head dock in the next week or two so if you want to pump your tanks before we shut the system down please do it ASAP. Thanks Dave

Winterizing your boat

Tomorrow it is going to get very cold. And, for many of you, this will be the last time you will use your boat until it warms back up. Don't let your boat be a statistic. Water to the Docks

It is almost that time of year again. Time to shut the water off to the docks. And we will also be shutting down the pump-a-head down for the winter too. The forecast indicates we may have some very cold temperatures coming up next week. We usually shut the water off at the end of October/first of November. That may have to coma a bit early this year. If you want to clean your boats off one more time this year or pump your tanks empty it is best to do it this weekend. On another note, even though it seems that we haven't had much snow yet we are sitting at about 670% snowpack today for the Great Salt Lake Drainage area. Don't get too excited yet. We've seen this show before just to have a disappointing winter. But it is a good start. At it appears the lake has stopped dropping. More good news Dave
