Sad news. We have lost another member of the Great Salt Lake community. Duane Evans died recently after a two year battle with cancer. Duane was an author of western adventures and a sailor at Great Salt Lake. His last boat, Ohana, is still on the lake but under new ownership. Bottom-Of-The-Pit Chil Party

Wow! Another year come and nearly gone. We had a wonderful Turkey Fest with 9 turkeys deep fryed and 140 people fed. Now it is time for the annual Bottom-of-the-Pit Chili Party. Saturday, December 23rd, we will celebrate the shortest day of the year being behind us and the coming of another boating season at Great Salt Lake. 11am to 3pm we will host the 50th? Annual Bottom-of-the-Pit Chili cookoff at the Cambria Room (the old yacht club common room). Bring your favorite chili recipe or other special pot-luck special dish or side. Come out and see old friends; maybe even enjoy a day on the water after having some great food. Prizes will be given for Most Original Recipe, Spiciest, Best Tasting Recipe. Water Year - How Are We Looking?

Well, so far, it is a mixed bag for the Water Year that started October 1st. October saw 125% direct precipitation into the lake November saw 124% direct precipitation But our snowpack is suffering. We are at 52% snowpack today. Not a big deal yet. It is the December-March snowpack that really matters. So we have plenty of time to catch up. National Weather Service states that we have an equal chance of being dryer-than-normal or wetter-than-normal but they are leaning on the Great Salt Lake Drainage area of being wetter-than-normal. The lake bottomed out early this year. We stopped dropping in September. And the lake has already started rising gaining 2/10ths of a foot so far. It is still very early but there are some positive signs for lake level in 2024. Dave

TURKEY FEST RSVP

Gate Code by Saltair

We replaced the keypad for the electronic gate near Saltair. The old code still works but you will now need to enter the pound key before the code. So, as an example, you would hit #2252 to activate the gate after hours. And no, that is not the real code. Thanks Dave

John Twitchell Celebration of Life

I just received word that John "Twitch" Twitchell's family will be hosting a Celebration of Life this Saturday at 2pm at the Sugar Peak Pavilion, Sugarhouse Park. Water to the Docks

It is time to shut the water off to the docks. We are approaching a cold spell coming up. Next Saturday, we will shut the water down to the docks and blow the lines out. So if you want to take advantage of the water it is time to do so. On that same note, we sent out several emails about NOT using hoses with aluminum fittings. Fittings need to be brass or plastic. Yet we had several people attach hoses with aluminum fittings to the hose bibs on the docks. These hoses and fittings electrolyzed themselves to the brass hose bibs causing damage. We have SEVERAL hose bibs that we have replaced through the summer and have SEVERAL more that need to be replaced again. Ever since COVID these hose bibs are VERY hard to find now and can take some time after we order them to get replacements. As stated in earlier emails, we will begin charging slip renters for the time and materials of replacing these bibs. PLEASE make sure you are not using hoses with aluminum fittings. This just doesn't work in a salt water / salt air environment like Great Salt Lake. Thank you Dave

TURKEY FEST - Time to RSVP

The 27th Annual Turkey Fest is just around the corner. This event started back in 1996 as a race between two Hobie Cats and then deep frying a turkey after the race to now being the largest social at the Great Salt Lake State Park. Last year we cooked up 9 turkeys and there wasn't a bit of turkey left after serving the whole community. If you have never had deep fried turkey you are missing out. This has always been a great event, a wonderful time to enjoy really good food and visit with old friends. As always, the event is open to the WHOLE marina community. The 27th Annual Turkey Fest is Saturday, November 18th with food being served at 4pm PROMPTLY. Be on time as the turkey goes quick. We will hold the social at the patio and Cambria Room (old Yacht Club Common Room) PLEASE RSVP when you can with the number of people you expect so I can start planning on how much turkey to purchase as well as serving utensils. Water to the Docks

Wash your boats now. We will be turning off the water to the docks and blowing out the water lines in the next few weeks. Please REMOVE YOUR HOSES from the hose bibs and either take them home or put them in your boat. PLEASE do not leave them on the dock as a tripping hazard. Water in the parking lot will remain on all winter if you need water. Speaking of water, the good news is that the lake is pretty well done dropping for the year. If we drop anymore it should only be 1/10th of a foot (1.2" Linda) Everyone with a four foot draft seem to be getting out just fine. Just make sure to stay dead center in the mouth as you go out. Winter rates start November 1st. See you at the annual Turkey Fest. Dave
