GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. What a great storm! Even though the official moisture totals, as reported at the airport, puts us at 83% towards our goals for October, the stations at the marina both report we are at 100% for all of October. And the snowpack total for the Great Salt Lake Drainage area is 183% And there is another storm on the horizon next week. We have a couple events this weekend and the weather is looking great. This Saturday the Great Salt Lake Yacht Club is hosting their annual Pumpkin Patch Regatta and Social (as well as trick-or-treating on the docks for the kids). Visit www.gslyc.org for more information And on Sunday we have the Mast Drop Party at noon. At 3pm is the First Annual Pumpkin Patch Radio Controlled Sailboat Regatta. We hope to have a Nirvana fleet as well as an Open fleet. WATER IS BEING SHUT OFF FOR THE YEAR. It looks like temperatures will stay warm enough to keep the water on until October 30th. On the 30th, though, we will turn the water off to the docks and shut down the pump-a-head. This means this is your last weekend to wash boats and sails and pump out your holding tanks. PLEASE! Do not forget to remove your hoses and other objects from the dock by November 4th. CRANE DAY. The last Crane Day for the year is Friday, November 2nd at 9am SHARP. If you are not on the crane list please get on it ASAP. I am making the final decision on which size crane to bring out. The larger the crane, the greater the cost. And if you are on the list but wont be making it please email me and let me know. THE YACHT CLUB BUOYS NEED TO BE PULLED FOR THE SEASON. I would like to plan on pulling the buoys on Sunday, November 4th at around noon. If you are available to help, are willing to get dirty, want a ride on Rescue One, and want to see parts of the lake you may not have seen, we can use your help. We have room for about six people max. Please let me know. It will take about two to three hours of your time. DAVEs ANNUAL TURKEY SOCIAL. I am hosting my annual Turkey Social on Saturday, November 17th. Last year we deep fried 8 turkeys. And there was nothing left afterwards. The weather was great, the patio was packed, and the food that everyone brought was awesome. More information will be sent out about this event but RSVPs are welcome as soon as possible so I can start making plans for all the supplies and turkeys that will be needed. Windy Season - Tips and Reminders

GSL and Antelope Slip Renters. It is here. Windy Season is upon us. October 1st starts frontal season, which means windy season. And it is beginning to look like we may be in an active frontal pattern this fall unlike last year. This should bring good news in the form of much needed moisture. But this news also brings caution. It is quite usual for the Great Salt Lake Marina area to see gusts well over 40mph during the typical frontal approach. And it is quite normal to see gusts well over 80mph several times during windy season, which lasts through May. Gusts over 100mph are not unheard of. For the Antelope Island Marina area, gusts do not get as strong as the GSL Marina area but they still can get well over 50mph. So it is time to prepare for the wind, rain, and snow. Some things to do and check for. Have you replaced your dock lines lately? When your dock lines get wet they also absorb salt. And when the dock lines dry out the salt remains. This salt then acts like millions of tiny razor blades cutting the inner core of the line. And eventually the line will break with strong gusts. Another punishing element for dock lines is UV. It is good practice to replace your dock lines once a year. I just replaced mine yesterday. Is your headsail tightly furled? A good practice is to take your spinnaker halyard and wrap it around your headsail. This prevents the sail from being grabbed from the wind and unwinding. A headsail coming unfurled can lead to a shredded sail and possibly a dismasting. If we see a headsail unfurl we will attempt to contact you. We will not try to secure it. Attempts in the past to secure someone's headsail has led to injuries of park employees and well meaning slip renters. Therefore, unfortunately, if your headsail comes unfurled, it will be left to nature as to what happens. Another good practice is just to take your headsail off if you aren't going to use your boat for awhile. What about your mainsail cover? Is it in good shape? A good practice is to wrap your mainsail cover with another rope. This prevents the cover from blowing apart in the wind and exposing your mainsail to the damaging forces of strong gusts as well as UV damage. Checked your hose clamps lately? Think you have all-stainless-steel hose clamps? You may want to think again. Many stainless steel hose clamps only have stainless steel bands. The screw and screw housing are actually lower grade steel and can rust out leading to a hose clamp failure. This can lead to a swamped or sunk boat. Take a magnet and see if it will stick to the screw and screw housing. Check all your hose clamps. If it looks questionable, replace it. The weight of snow will push the boat down in the water. This can lead to water coming in where a hose clamp has lost its integrity. I have several pictures of boats that have sunk out here during the winter months. They all sunk because of a hose clamp failure. Checked your clevis pins, cotter pins and split rings lately? Don't lose a mast because of a failure here. Checked your turnbuckles lately? Are they pinned? Do they have locking nuts? If they have locking nuts are the nuts firmly seated against the turnbuckle body? Are your freshwater tanks drained and winterized? Have you pumped out your holding tanks? Remember, we are turning the pump-a-head off come November 1. It will remain off for the winter. Have you removed your dinghies and kayaks from the docks? We will REQURE ALL dinghies and kayaks removed from the docks come the first week of November. We will also REQURE all hoses be removed from the docks. If you have a hanger for your hose on a piling this is fine. Do NOT place your hoses on power pedestals. If you cannot hang your hose on a piling and have it completely off the dock, it must be removed for safety reasons. Power cords must be neatly wrapped around a power pedestal (no hoses wrapped around pedestals) or hung on a piling. They cannot be draped loosely on a dock. The reason for wanting all hoses and dinghies/kayaks off docks is for the safety of the people shoveling the docks all winter. Dinghies or kayaks that remain in the water in your own slip is just fine. Dinghies that are in the water are subject to sinking due to snow though. Check on them regularly. Will your dock box make it through the winter? Will your boat cover make it through the winter? Is there anything on or around your boat that could make a dangerous projectile in strong winds? Have a good tip I forgot? Send it to me and I will make sure it gets out by email and on the web site. On a good note, I hope to have four dock carts here in the near future. Two of these dock carts will be stored in the north basin along the fence line. Two in the south basin along the fence line. We will secure them with cable and lock. The lock will be keyed the same as the dock keys. Please, when they finally arrive, keep them locked and secured. I'm not worried about them being stolen. Securing them and locking them is to keep them from blowing away in wind storms. This spring we hope to purchase more dock carts with our donations account so each dock will have its own cart. Selling Your Boats

GSL and Antelope Island Slip Renters, I know several of you have just sold or are in the process of selling your boats. There has been a little confusion lately with regards to the slips after the boat has sold. So let me clear it up a bit. When you sell your boat the slip DOES NOT automatically transfer over. At the time you sell your boat the slip contract is cancelled. It is your responsibility to let us know you have sold your boat and that you are terminating your slip contract and autopay form. If you do not, we will continue billing you and charging your credit card. Again, the slip does not automatically transfer over. Please make it clear to the new owner that he must come in and arrange a slip right after purchasing the boat. If there is no waiting list for that dock or that slip and the new owner wants to keep that slip we will work it out. Otherwise the new owner will need to arrange for another slip. Please make it clear that the new owner must inform us right after purchasing the boat whether he wants a slip or he will be pulling the boat. If you inform us that you have sold the boat and we do not have a contract from the new owner by the next month, the boat will be moved to boat jail. In the past we have had little problem. But this summer we seem to have quite a few boats that have sold but the new owner has never come in and arranged for a slip. In some cases a boat was sold and we didn't know it. We continued to charge the previous owner. So to reduce confusion we will stick to the letter of the contract and policy. New boat owners MUST fill out a contract within one or two days of purchasing your boat. GSL and Antelope Slip Renters Two important pieces of news. The first one is that we have had a power failure with the marina mouth light. This includes the stadium light that lights up the marina mouth as well as the green entrance light. The red entrance light still works. We will get the other light repaired as soon as possible. Second: It is slip contract time again. REMEMBER! ALL slip contracts and ALL credit card autopay forms EXPIRE on DECEMBER 31st. NO EXEPTIONS! In order to continue your slip contract AND your credit card autopay withdrawals WE NEED THE NEW FORMS. We will be sending these forms out the first week of November. By email. We have a new way to make it easier for you and me. You will receive an automated email today that will have all your current information (no sensitive or secure information will be included). When you receive the email check the information we have on file for you. If it is correct IGNORE THE EMAIL AND DO NOT RESPOND. If the information is NOT correct please correct the information on the email form and then follow the instructions on returning the email back to me. My computer will be automatically updated with the correct information. This may include email addresses, phone numbers or home addresses. This will aid us in getting the new contract information out to you. Again, Only respond back if there is information that needs to be corrected. For those that have a substantial PAST DUE balance, we CANNOT renew your contract until balances have been brought down. If you are not able to bring your balances down by December 31st your contract will expire and WILL NOT BE RENEWED. Please plan to have your boats removed from the marina by December 31st. Again, you will ALL receive the email requesting updated information. EVEN IF YOU NO LONGER HAVE A BOAT IN THE MARINA, you may receive this email. It is because you are still on the email list. IF you do not have a boat in the marina and do not want to receive emails anymore please let me know. If you no longer have a boat in the marina but still want to be on the email list you may ignore the email. Nothing will change. Once we have the updated information we will send another email out at the beginning of November on instructions on how to renew your slip contract. For those that have a substantial balance you will probably not receive the November email but rather a contract termination letter. If you want a statement sent to you please let us know and that will be done. If you think that you have been paying by credit card all the time check your credit card statements. Some of you that always have autopay in the past never sent your forms in and you have a substantial balance. Hope this was all clear as mud or as clear as the Great Salt Lake is during the winter during the algae plume. On a good note, the lake is almost done dropping for the year. We will likely only lose another 2/10ths of a foot. On the bad news, the reef is now shallow. DO NOT TRY TO CROSS IT. The reef over by Saltair (known as Bry's Bump, or more properly known as the Goggins Reef) is very shallow again. Make sure you follow the SALTAIR RULE; do not sail so you can see the east side (actually the north side) of the Saltair building. Outboard Motor Dolly

GSL Slip Renters, I know many of you struggle when taking your outboard motors off and transporting them into town for repairs. Well, we have now ordered a dolly that can be used to wheel your outboard motors from your boats, up the docks and to your cars. As with the mast dolly's, the outboard dolly is available for use free. The only stipulation is that it cannot leave the premises. The dolly was bought out of our "Donations" account, which means it does not affect our budget. If there are other items we may be able to purchase that would make life easier at the marina, please let us know and we will put it on the list and prioritize it. When "Donation" funds become available we will try to purchase the items. One of our thoughts is to try to buy dock carts for each dock. Cold Temps and Upcoming events

GSL and Antelope Slip Renters. We just had a cold front roll through the marina. That means much colder temperatures at night. Which also means it is probably October at Great Salt Lake. Over the next several nights we are likely to experience temperatures below freezing at night. This should pose no threat to your boats since the water temperature of 68 degrees will keep the interior of your boat warm enough to keep lines from freezing. But the lake temperature will start dropping rapidly now. It is time to think about winterizing your boats. Some things to consider for winter are: . Winterize. Put RV antifreeze or Vodka in your lines . Empty holding tanks. We will not be able to keep the pump-a-head open all winter anymore. We tried but every winter we had a massive blow out because not enough salt water was pumped through the system after emptying a tank. Only a couple more weeks of water to the dock. . Change your dock lines. Salt crystals build up inside dock lines and cut them from the inside out. Then, when the strong winds blow, the dock line explodes. . Check all your hose clamps. Even though you have a stainless hose clamp, it does not mean the screw and screw housing is stainless. In fact it is more likely it isn't. Test it by using a magnet. IF the magnet sticks to the screw and screw housing, it is not stainless and will eventually fail. Check all your hose clamps for any line that has water coming into the boat and any line that drains water from the boat. This includes cockpit drains. Even if a hose clamp is above water, enough snow weight may force it below water line and sink a boat. It has happened several times over the years . Secure furling sails. Secure main sails and main sail covers. . Secure anything that could be a projectile . Check the condition of your dock box. Will it make it through the winter? October begins Frontal Pattern in regards to weather. This means Windy Season. This means broken dock lines, shredded sails, and missing dock boxes. Today's front was the first of windy season. Right on schedule. Windy season lasts from October 1st to May 1st. Upcoming Dates and Events Just because Summer is over doesn't mean sailing and marina events are over for the season. In fact fall is a great time at Great Salt Lake. . October 6th, Duck Hunt season begins. Save a duck hunter - educate them on the perils of Great Salt Lake if you don't pay attention and respect her. . October 13-15 - the last GSLYC regatta of the year. See www.gslyc.org for more information . October 27 - Pumpkin Patch Regatta, social and trick-or-treating for the kids. Event is open to all. Go to www.gslyc.org for more information . October 28 at noon - Mast Drop Party. Help others as they help you drop your mast in preparation for Crane Day. Chili will be served. Side dishes welcome . November 2nd at 9am SHARP - Crane Day . This has become the second largest social of the year at Great Salt Lake. Event is open to all marina users (GSL and Antelope) . December 15th, The 37th annual Bottom-of-the-Pit Chili party. - More information to follow . Holiday Season is just around the corner. We will be having a contest for the best decorated (or lighted boat) for Holiday season. The winner gets one month free dock rent. Contest runs from November 1 to January 1.
