SNOW at Marina tomorrow

GSL Slip Renters; Current weather charts indicate a fairly high probability that the Great Salt Lake Marina will be staring down the barrel of Lake Effect Snow late tonight to early tomorrow morning. There is a chance we could see six inches or more snow on boats as the sun comes up Sunday. Now I don't want to get everyone too excited about a snow storm after the winter we have been having. But I do want to let you know about the chance of snow piling up on your boats. The lake temperature is 30 degrees. Scuppers can be frozen; debris can clog scuppers. The weight of the snow can push boats down in the water allowing sea water to start entering scuppers and flooding or even sinking an errant boat. We have had a mild winter. But now is not the time to be complacent about your boats. Are they prepared for the weight of snow? If we do receive snow tomorrow, we will be plowing the parking lots and shoveling sidewalks and observation decks. But the docks will probably not be shoveled until Monday. IF you are not too busy skiing on fresh powder tomorrow you may want to consider coming out and clearing snow off your boats (sorry, this is not a service we provide at the marina yet). We will send an email out tomorrow morning regarding snow totals if we do end up in the path of the LAKE EFFECT snow. Harbor Master

Bud Ellett Passes

Fellow Sailors, There is sad news for our sailing community in this morning's obituaries. Walter R. "Bud" Ellett, long-time Great Salt Lake sailor and Great Salt Lake Yacht Club member has passed away. Many of you will remember Bud and his Catalina 27 "Windsong." I remember, many years ago, seeing Bud sail "Windsong" into the marina and into his slip single-handed, which greatly impressed me. Whenever I'm able to do that now with my boat, I think of Bud. Reminder . . . Wednesday, February 15th: Sail Trim by Tim Adams Tim Adams has been sailing for over 30 years and has extensive racing experience ranging from Newport Rode Island to the Pacific Coast. He taught sailing in Texas for a number of years and has completed several ocean passages including trips to Hawaii, Alaska, the South Pacific and Mexico. Tim has dabbled in optimizing sail shape on his own boats. He will share basic sail design and shaping ideas and how to apply them to racing and cruising through proper trim techniques. This will be the second of the Great Salt Lake Yacht Club's 2012 FREE seminars being presented on Wednesday evenings through March 14, from 7 to 9 pm. The seminars are being held in the Safety Consortium training room, located at 400 W Lawndale Dr. (2500 S) in South Salt Lake. To get to the Safety Consortium building, go to 300 West at 21st. or 27th. Lake Level

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users. Just a quick note on the lake level; Last year the lake topped off at 4198.6 Today we are at 4198.3 (just 3/10ths of a foot lower than last year's HIGH) Last year, on Valentine's Day, the lake level was 4195 (3.3 feet lower than NOW) On average we come up 1.2 feet between Valentine's Day and the date we top of (between mid May to early July) Even though our snowpack is somewhat low at this time we still have time to see that snowpack above average. It is quite common to see a snowpack rebound in March and April. Even though we had a disastrous December our direct precipitation during the Water Year for Great Salt Lake is near normal. In closing, it is VERY likely the lake will be HIGHER this June than last June (4199 or higher). And, at worst, our low lake level for 2012 will be near where our low lake level was last November.
