I ran across this yesterday while reading Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness*. It brought back vivid memories of my first encounter with tufa reef, and explains why every subsequent bump and scrape has been a little nerve-wracking. "... for a seaman, to scrape the bottom of the thing that's supposed to float all the time under his care is the unpardonable sin. No one may know of it, but you never forget the thump - eh? A blow on the very heart. GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users Amazingly, Great Salt Lake has been in a very narrow band of dry air for the last two days. This narrow band of dry aircontinues to track over the lake. It has split the current monsoonal weather system in half pushing part of it north into Idaho and the other part south and east into the Wasatch. In other words, Great Salt Lake has been a pleasant weather island in a mass of monsoonal moisture. Current charts show that this may be the case for the rest of the evening. Yet, with NWS still having a "Severe Thunderstorm Watch" for the northwest part of Utah, we will continue with the Storm Warning for the Great Salt Lake through the evening. Tricky pattern. Marina News Great Salt Lake State Marina July 22, 2008 Current Conditions Lake Level 4195.2 Lake Level Trend Dropping ¯ Water Temperature 82° Hypothermia Index Exhaustion: Indefinite / Death: Indefinite Porta Potty Rinse Station It died. That fateful dump by some individual this winter, after we had winterized it and covered it up, finally took its toll. It has now been removed from the dock. A new devise is being attached to the Pump-A-Head. This will allow you to use the Pump-A-Head to suck out the contents of your porta potty holding tanks and into the pump-a-head. DO NOT DUMP porta-potties in the restrooms. Instructions on the use of the pump-a-head will be posted soon. Lake Level We are now in the 'negatives' for the year. We have just dropped below our January 1st level and are at late September 2007 levels. Obviously, this would seem that we are only two months ahead of the evaporation from last year. But it is actually worse. We still have the rest of July and all of August, which are the peak evaporation days. We are tracking almost dead on the 2004 levels. We are one foot lower than this time last year. Last year, most of the deep draft boats were done by mid August due to the marina mouth. Now our problem is not the mouth but the area by 'B' dock. This is the area we tried to hit this spring when we were doing the dredging but were not able to reach when the barge jammed itself in the mouth. The deeper draft boats will be having trouble here by mid August. If we had not dredged this spring, the larger draft boats would not have had a season this year. The smaller draft boats would be done by September. Well, we are working on a solution to our 'B' dock problem. We have a plan. It is being bid out. We are seeking funding. We hope to implement the plan by early to mid August to get the greatest impact from our plan. If this works, we could possibly buy another month, maybe two for the deeper draft boats. This plan is only a band-aid to our problem. It may not FULLY work. But it should help. And, since the cost is so low compared to the spring dredging, we should be able to implement it quickly (if equipment and funding is available). No Army Corp permit issues. Even with this plan, the deeper draft boats may still have a problem in the fall. But, I'm thinking the majority of the boats will be able to access the lake through the whole season. We may hit 4.5 in the marina mouth by October. 'B' Dock The vessels on the north side of 'B' dock are already having problems getting out of their slips. This will just get worse. Within a month your keels will probably be resting in the mud. Because of this, any boat that wants to relocate to another dock may now do so. We will continue to charge you 'B' dock rates (unless 'I' dock is utilized). Make arrangements for a slip assignment PRIOR to moving off of 'B' dock. In the spring, when the water comes back up, you will be obligated to return to your original slips or pay the rate of the new slip. Vessels on the south side of 'B' dock should not have any problems this year. Spider Spraying We have been very pro-active on spraying for spiders this year. In my opinion, it seems to be working quite well. I have not seen nearly as many spiders this year as last year. We have a crew coming out over this week and the next week that will be hosing off underneath each of the docks trying to get rid of the webs and egg sacks before the next generation of spiders begin hatching underneath the docks. Mast Hoist There was a recent accident with some people using the mast hoist. The failure was not the hoist. The failure was personal equipment. Please take great caution when using the hoist. Take great caution with your own equipment. Make sure your lines are good quality and up to the job (load). Make sure your securing line will not be chafed by sharp metal as the mast is hoisted. USE THE MAST HOIST AT YOUR OWN RISK. Weather Patterns We have recently been in a monsoonal pattern. This is typical for this time of year. The Reef Gang Thank you, to this months Reef volunteers. We just beat our June statistics for boats being stuck on the reef. And we still have over a week to go. Saltair, The Navigational Wonder Many people may not know how valuable Sailtair III is as a navigational aide. If used wisely it will tell you where you are and can keep you off the reef. So here is how it works. Saltair has four sides. If you can see the east side you are on the freeway heading for the marina. If you can see the south side, you are IN the marina. If you can see the west side, you are on the lake. AND if you can see the north side? (the side facing the Salt Lake International Airport) You are on the reef. Try it out some time. It works very well. A Sailor's Golden Rule One of our slip renters (one who has been stuck on the reef a few times this year) recently shared with me his new philosophy; "Stay off the reef? Stay off the sand? Stay off the radio" Pirates of the Grea Salt Lake It appears the long awaited DVD of "Pirates of the Great Salt Lake" may soon be released. The recent rumor is that the DVD will be released no later than September. The release may coincide with Talk-Like-A-Pirate-Day and may be preceded by a short release at the theatres. Camp around the lake trip On August 23rd and 24th we had scheduled a Camp-Around-The-Lake trip. A couple weeks ago I sent an email out concerning the high price of fuel and whether people still wanted to do the trip. I received zero response. I may cancel or modify this trip do a day-excursion for lack of interest. Let me know your thoughts. Severe Weather Warning

Severe Weather Warning! A Storm Warning has been issued for the whole Great Salt Lake. In addition the NWS has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for NW Utah through 9pm this evening. We are currently tracking a few thunder cells that will affect the Great Salt Lake. And the weather charts are showing ripe conditions for developing storms through the day and late evening. We may see very strong winds with gusts over 70mph, dangerous lightning, hail up to 1.5 inches thick and brief heavy rain. The cells we are currently tracking are showing substantial energy. We may increase our weather warning to a "Hurricane Force Warning" later this afternoon. If you have any loose items on or around your boat or you are concerned about your dock lines, now would be a good time to secure your property. Weather Warning A Storm Warning has been issued for the Great Salt Lake Marina Area Several small cells are tracking accross the West Desert and aiming for the Great Salt Lake. These cells, although not very impressive at this time, are likely to develop through the day. These cells can produce strong winds and possible lightning. Navigation Notice 07-19-08 #1 Deep Channel Buoy #R10 Deep Channel buoy #R10 has been replaced. Please keep a fair distance away from the buoys as they are marking a growing, shallow reef. A safe rule would be more than one boat length away. All the deep channel buoys are anchored right near the reef. This causes the chains to grind on the reef when the wind switches to the south. We try to keep these buoys maintained but they do break free on a regular basis. Caution and the use of a GPS may save you from an unintended grounding when one of these buoys drift loose. Navigation Notice 07-18-08 #1 Missing Buoy Repaired Buoy Item #1 Deep Channel Buoy #R10 is missing. This is a critical buoy that is right on the edge of the reef outside of the marina. This buoy is adjacant to the warning buoy on the NE corner of the marina breakwall. Please give some distance from all the red nun buoys when leaving and returning to the marina. All these buoys are right on the reef line. We will try to have this critical buoy replaced by tomorrow morning. Until then, pass the danger buoy within 1 to 2 boat lengths to keep clear of the reef. As a general rule, keep clear of all the red buoys. Stay about 1 to 2 Item #2 The red light on Deep Channel #R4 has been repaired and is now working again.
