GSL Marina News in Brief Current Conditions Today's lake leve is 4195.6 This puts 5' at the marina mouth (At optimum approach) - Remember though, wind and storm surge can affect this depth. Snowpack for the GSL Drainage area is 105% Water Temperature is around 42 degrees. Dredging Some very good news has arrived from the Army Corp of Engineers. It seems they are inclined to approve our permit to dredge the marina mouth. We need to go through a few more hoops to complete their requests so that we know what to do with the spoils but it is looking good. Once these last few steps are finalized, we should be ready to announce our plans and dates. All I can say right now is that we are shooting for a date very soon. Slip Fees March is the last month for winter rates. April begins summer rates. Mast Hoist The mast hoist should be arriving at the marina some time this week for installation. This hoist will be located on the Rescue dock. You will be able to utilize this hoist by parking your boat between the Rescue dock and the Service dock. Registrations on Boats Remember, in order to have a boat in the waters of the state of Utah, they must be currently registered, display the current registration sticker, and properly display the Utah numbers. Last spring, several citations were issued for improper registration, failure to display and expired registrations. Both of the GSL Rangers were discussing the plans to walk the docks at the first of March checking for compliance and issuing citations. Storm Update

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users Yesterday's storm blew through here with multiple gusts in the 50's and a top gust of 60mph. No damage has been observed. STORM WARNING GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users A Storm Warning has been issued for the Great Salt Lake Marina area and the Great Salt Lake Strong winds have started to blow at the marina. The strongest gust so far has been 50mph. These strong winds are expected to build and last throughout the day. Tooele Twisters and blowing dust are common. No damage has been observed at this time. GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users Current Conditions Current Lake Level 4195.5 and rising quickly now. Marina mouth 4.9' at optimum Water Temperature is currently 35 Degrees Forecast It is too hard to predict whether the lake will have a net positive flow for 2008 yet. That will be much easier to predict at the end of March. Yet there are some good indicators that it will be a good year. a.. Stream flows into Great Salt Lake are running at 90 to 129% of normal. b.. c.. We are forecasted to be in an "Unusual Moist Spell" for the Bear River Drainage and in a "Very Most Spell" for the Weber-Ogden and Provo River Drainage for the next three months. d.. e.. Soil Mosture Content is "Above Normal" f.. g.. Although most of the GSL Drainange area is still listed as in a severe drought we are forecasted to see improvement over the next three months. All this points to a very good spring for the Great Salt Lake. It also indicates that, unlike four years ago, most of the precipitation should flow to the lake rather than being absorbed into the ground. Other Updates We are still working hard on the dredging situation. Right now everything looks good for dredging this spring. BUT, I want to emphasize that we could hit a snag at anytime that could postpone these plans. The mast hoist has arrived in Utah and has been painted. We should see it being installed in the next few weeks. All codes and locks in the marina have been changed. If you do not have your 2008 slip contracts in, please get them in quickly. Parking Pass enforcement has begun. If you would like to see these weekly updates in email form, please let me know. If not, also let me know. If enough of you like this format I will continue to send them out. I am also working on a new edition of the "Marina News" that will be more in-depth. GSL Slip Renters Some of you have submitted some hilarious comments back about the Dock Line policy. Yes, the email was a joke. But it was also intended to drive home the "DOCK LINE" issue. By my count we have had nearly 45 broken dock lines in the last three weeks. One vessel drifted away after all four dock lines broke. A good practice is to change dock lines every year. Maybe we should make April 1st "National Check Your Dock Lines Day" Chapmans Piloting has a great section on size and type of dock lines along with the proper methods for securing your boat. For those I have stressed out by my email, I do apologize. For those that submitted your photo's and humerous comments, Thank you. They were great. Dave

Dock Lines

GSL Slip Renters Due to all the broken dock lines and cleats lately, the Marina Management has adopted a new policy refered to the "Minimum Standard Dock Line and Authorized Bow/Stern Cleats for the Great Salt Lake Marina". All vessels occupying a slip in the Great Salt Lake Marina will be required to upgrade to these lines and cleats by the end of February. Dock lines must be a minimum of one inch double braid. To make it easier to purchase both the cleats and lines we have attached a picture of the cleats that must be installed on all boats and the lines that must now be used. Please refer to this picture when purchasing your upgrades. These upgrades are mandatory whether your boat is a 45' racer/cruiser or a 9' Sabot. Thank you Marina Management Staff

GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users Lake Level: 4195.5 Marina Mouth: 4.8' GSL Drainage Snowpack 111.4% Lake is beginning to noticeably rise. Lasted report on the Mast Hoist The mast hoist has arrived in Salt Lake and is being painted. Installation should begin in about two weeks. Dredging We have had several meetings over the last two months regarding dredging the mouth of the marina. SO FAR, all these meetings have been very productive and are moving us forward to our goal. GSL Slip Renters and Marina Users The storm has pretty well blown through the marina now. Winds never became severe at the marina but were quite significant on the lake. This was truley a tricky storm to predict and follow. There is no obvious damage at the marina other than the previously listed boat with a broken dock line. We probably had about 5 inches of snow at the marina. Most of this has been blown around so we have bare patches and larger drifts. Some cockpits are full of snow even the the rest of the boat is pretty well clear of snow. Boats with the most snow in the cockpits appear to be the open transom boats. None of these boats appear to be in any danger at this time from sinking. The parking lots and docks are ice sheets covered with drifting snow. The roads around and to the marina are also very slick. And, this is the anniversiary of the Valentines Day Storm that did so much damage to the marina in 1999. Happy Anniversiary. Thank you Dave Shearer Harbor Master Great Salt Lake Marina
