Dave Feintuch died last year so there will only be the 6 or so books in the 'Hope' saga  if was interesting but i found it way to depressing after a while.

It doesn't have Cook-style intertwining plots, but I'd recommend "Midshipmans Hope" to anyone who likes military sci-fi.  Very, very addictive.  The three books after it are also excellent.
