earlier Roger Zelazny (The Lord of Light) and the earlier Gene Wolf (the Torturer series) - both are brilliant wordsmiths - lyrical and captivating.

Gotta second some of the others' recommendations. Butcher, Weber, 
Abercrombie, Rothfuss, and Erickson are all favorites of mine, but I'd 
also add L. E. Modesitt and  Lois M. Bujold to that list (especially 
Modesitt's recent Imager series and Bujold's Chalion books)
