FOTD 09-01-02 (Mad Dance [7])
FOTD -- January 09, 2002 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image, with its tortured, writhing arms, reminds me of a wild dance. I named it "Mad Dance". The image is a scene in a perturbed part of the hypercomplex Mandelbrot set. Since the hypercomplex set itself is a four-dimensional thing, when we perturb the starting point, we are actually drawing a slice through the eight-dimensional hypercomplex Julibrot figure. I have done little exploring in this fractal, so the things I find in it are usually as much a surprise to me as they are to the viewer. Much of the hypercomplex M-set is identical to the classic M-set, but some of it is entirely different. Today's image pictures some of the different parts. The twisted arms of today's image are like the hairline tendrils that appear just behind the valleys of perturbed classic M-sets. These twisted arms appear only in the perturbed hypercomplex M-sets. The ghostly blue feature partially hidden in the background is a part of the Hypercomplex set that I have so far been unable to find directly, though admittedly I have spent little time searching for it. Despite, or perhaps because of, the writhing arms, the image is striking -- a feature which earns it its rating of 7. The render time of just under 4 minutes is bearable, though a better way of viewing the image is to visit one of the following two web sites: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> If the first site has not yet been updated, try the second. The fractal weather today here at Fractal Central was sunny but chilly. The temperature of 38F 3C limited the cats to only a brief outing on the porch. It's probably a good thing they were outside only briefly, because the neighborhood bully tomcat was in the area, and if Tippy had met him, a fight would certainly have broken out. I see that it's now time for a day's work followed by some deep but unimportant pondering, and finally by a trip to fractal- land. I'll return in 24 hours with the continuing saga of my fractal adventures. Until then, take care, and the world will not end until the last fractal has been found.
