Can anyone recommend a way to see IF a win98 se machine is sending out junk at the behest of someone else? ...... (See previous email at the bottom of this email.)

Peter, If you are not able to locate and stop the offending program directly, ZoneAlarm is a good way to stop offending programs from accessing the internet. It will also list each program in a pop-up message window at the time it first tries to access the internet after ZoneAlarm's installation. The first time after you install ZoneAlarm that each program on your machine tries to access the internet it asks you if it is OK for that program to do so. Each time you answer Yes or No and "Remember this Answer" ZoneAlarm builds a table of programs that are allowed to access the internet and which programs are not allowed to access the internet. You can edit this table at any time. Under ZoneAlarm's "Program Control" > "Program" tab, a single left click on the red "X" next to a program in ZoneAlarm's list of programs allows you to change the program's internet access from "Block" to "Allow" (or vice versa). So, you say Yes for your browser, email and similar obvious programs. It is pretty clear when *you* run a program (for the first time after ZoneAlarm was installed) and you immediately get a pop up message from ZoneAlarm asking if this program can access the internet, that *you* were the person who ran the program, so it is OK to say Yes in this situation. You can also usually identify the program by the name of the executable that ZoneAlarm lists. I would recommend saying No to any programs that you do not recognize or that just ran at a random time. You can always enable them later if you goof and, say, prevent Outlook Express from getting your email. If ZoneAlarm does identify a program that is sending out junk, you can do a search for instructions on how to remove the offending program using Google or another search engine.

The last updated version of ZoneAlarm that supported the Windows-98 system will still work. I believe that version is 6.1.744.001.

I have a copy of ZoneAlarm 6.1.744.001 that I am running on Win98SE if anyone needs a copy. It is just over 10MB -- which prevents my ISP (Earthlink) from being willing to let me email it. My free web site only allows a total size of 10MB so I can't upload it to there... Hmmm. Definitely download a firewall, such as ZoneAlarm or Kerio. I have been using ZoneAlram for many years now with much success.

Besides the programs you list above, you can also get Lavasoft's Ad-Aware for free to do some checking. You can never have enough protection for your system. There is no one product that is capable of finding and trapping everything, so best to have several and use them regularly.
