Kim, I will try to download and install Virtual PC this week and report back to the fractint list with a mini-tutorial on how to set it up and run fractint. It's been so long since I installed the old Connectix version that I really don't remember what was involved. I don't remember it being very difficult but I'm sure there are a few sticky points.
Oh! ONE more thing- do you think, if i run Virtual PC, the best environment would be Win98? Already worrying about where I'd find a copy, before you even answer!<<<
If you mean the guest system, then NO! Fractint was written for DOS, therefore you want to run it in DOS, not WinAnything. I think that Virtual PC still comes with a pre-installed DOS guest. Nick
Excuse me butting in! I have downloaded and installed Virtual PC, but have a major problem. You see my computer does not have a floppy drive. Therefore I can't load a boot-up DOS into the Virtual disk which I created. I'm reluctant to change the boot order in my BIOS, to get a CD or the Virtual PC to boot the computer. (And that presumes I could get a bootable DOS onto a CD... it's on floppies.), I've been thinking, too, that "isn't that what happens in XP, DOS runs in a virtual machine"? If so, where's the advantage into trying to get DOS and Fractint into Virtual PC? Linux? Maybe, but so far I have not found sufficient information regarding Virtual PC to allow me to install and run it Could be that the thing is obvious to more computer-savvy people than I. FreeDOS comes on CDs (i.e. you can download an .iso file and burn it to make a bootable CD). Fractint worked perfectly on FreeDOS for me last time I tried it, but it is much faster in Linux with Xfractint. On 7/18/06, John Wilson <juanw@telus.net> wrote:

Thanks Johnathan, I tried FreeDOS and am having at least some success with it. Virtual PC recognized my CD drive and the .iso file on it. I can get a FreeDos installation started, but need to research all the menu items offered. Frankly I don't know what I'm doing yet. Fractint comes later!
