FOTD -- November 23, 3002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The fractal adventures today are still taking place in the giant claw, this time on the biting edge of the upper claw, where, a short distance inland, I found a two-way symmetry which told me that a Mandelbrot atom was near. Often, these surface symmetries lead to what I call 'dry lakes', where the symmetry ends in a blank, but in this case, a midget was indeed waiting at the bottom of the pit. It's not an outstanding midget, only an average one, with most of the impact coming from the strong color palette. Instead of coloring the outside with the normal equal-iteration bands, I have colored it with the < tdis > option, which creates the fiery terraces surrounding the midget, and explains the name "Fiery Terraces". I have already described the image as average, and that is the way I rated it. The time from parameter file to finished image is 8 minutes on my aging P200 machine. The time required to download the completed GIF image from: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> or from: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> is less than half the render time. The dense fog early Friday lifted by late morning, leading to a cloudy day with occasional sprinkles of rain. The temperature of 49F 9.5C was not enough to make up for the wet grass, leaving the fractal cats with a boring indoor day. A mid-afternoon treat of turkey eased their irritation, but the day was not yet finished. A high wind arose at nightfall, which insured a skittish evening. As for me, I've got a bit of work to do before taking it easy for the rest of the day. I'm departing now, but I'll be back in 24 hours with another (hopefully) awe-inspiring fractal from the great beyond (wherever that is). Until that glorious moment, take care, and what's wrong with the philofractal list? Messages have not been delivered to all of the Lists which run from Damien's server (apparently only to those that are worth remembering exist). Here are a couple from the past week: _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2002 19:01:41 -0500 From: "Damien M. Jones" <dmj@fractalus.com> To: fractal-art@lists.fractalus.com Subject: [fractal-art] Administrivia: list outage Another power outage disabled the list server while I was out of town. I'm still trying to figure out why the battery backups didn't keep things running long enough to handle the outage, but service was restored this afternoon. Damien M. Hi folks, It seems I've been sending out a lot of administrative messages lately. A few months ago I moved to a different web host, and things have been bumpy ever since. I've had several power outages (with no explanation), and even worse, because the IP address block I was given resides next to a spammer's network block, it too was listed with the spammer. This resulted in quite a few people not being able to receive mail from the various mailing lists run through fractalus.com, as their ISPs would believe I was part of a spam network. Yesterday (Thursday) things got considerably worse, as the bills for the network connections went unpaid and UUnet pulled the plug. I wasn't exactly unprepared; I had been planning to move to a new net connection for several weeks and was waiting for that line to be installed. Thursday morning was the first chance I had to move to that new line, but before I could begin the transition UUnet had shut off the connection. What this means is that although I have the server itself moved to a new location, which enables me to send this e-mail out (and hopefully reach everyone), the directory services which match "fractalus.com" with this new address are out of sync. I am working on getting that corrected but until it does, you will not be able to post to the lists, look at the web sites, or download any files. That may be one or two more days. So I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but this time it truly was beyond my control. :) --Damien _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ Sincerely, P.N.L. ------------------------------------------------- http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/PNL_Fractals.html
