Fractint for Windows
Problem just arrived this morning.. The latest beta seems to have been running fine excepting for overlapping names in the PAR menu. Now, however I'm getting a message "Unexpected error, crash dump saved to. (**** this is not a misprint***, my parentheses) Please include this file with your bug report" . Unfortunately this must have slithered off to some distant corner of my system and cannot be found. This is followed by a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library message Buffer overrun detected! Progrm ...Stone Soup Group\Fractint for Windows\fractint.exe A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue and must be terminated. Corruption in my computer? It want start to smell, will it? John W.

What's this about overlapping names? Can you email me a screen shot? Does it happen with the default PAR sets?

I don't think the crash dump stuff was working properly in beta 5. I believe its working properly now in that it saves useful data. However, if things get too munged up, then even attempting to save a crash dump may not work properly. Look for *.dmp files in your folder where you installed FractInt for Windows. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>
I can no longer use Fractint for Windows... I get a crash dump each time. I'm attaching one of them, though I'm not sure that this works in the mailing list, so I'm adding a copy to your home e-mail address. Also, I cannot see the overlapping names right now, for the same reason. I think that I probably should reload the software or try a Windows Restore to a couple of days ago! Is Makecfg still supposed to work with the new Fractint for Windows beta? I read a post today which reminded me that I hadn't tried it. When I ran it I created this fractint.cfg file: ---------------------------- Makefcfg 1.0 -- A Fractint video utility by The Stone Soup Group Option settings (try makefcfg -h to see how to set): Showing 256 color modes [yes] (always) Showing truecolor modes [no ] (default no) Showing 16 color modes [no ] (default no) Starting FKEY [F2 ] (default F2) Overwrite fractfg.old [no ] (default no) fractint.cfg exists - renaming to fractcfg.old Reading your VESA Video BIOS ... Begin writing fractint.cfg Can't open fractint.cfg Done writing fractint.cfg ----------------------------- No drama as I'd got at least two copies and makecfg made yet another but what's going on here? Windows XP SP2, Radeon 9600 card. Chris
Whoah! I made that mistake, too. I copied a bunch of pars, frms etc from DOS Fractint to the Windows version. Then I accidentally hit that makefconfig, and got the exact result you have described. I was baffled by the death of Fractint for Windows until I corrected it by restoring the proper CFG file from fractcfg.old, instead of that text file which makefconfig left me! You definitely do not want to use MAKECFG.EXE with the Beta version. In fact, you probably should not even be saving PAR files with the Beta version, as the images might not be able to be reproduced when a final version comes out. I do know that the images currently produced with the Beta version are not quite like what is produced with the previous DOS version. For a while I was generating Jim's FOTD images with both versions of FractInt to do a comparative testing of the output images. But stopped after a couple of weeks when I saw there were noticeable differences in appearance between the two. Thanks Paul and John W. I just like the fact that I can get on and do other things so I'm using that beta version all the time now. I take your point about the saving of pars though. My previous answering email is held up by the moderators because I tried to supply an example of the 'crushed' par listing for Richard. Maybe they'll let it through as it was only just a smidgin over the 40K limit? Chris ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul N. Just send it to him off list. That's what I do with screenshots and such. Lee
'Twas indeed my original plan but there's no email address for him! If you're out there Richard and you'd like that screen-shot send me an email and I'll post it to you. I have this and will attempt to address it before the next beta. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

The par file itself should be fine, but as you noted there may be differences in the rendered images.

There are probably subtle defects lurking in the integer fractal types that are present. The code that implements these types may be sensitize to 16-bit integers vs. 32-bit integers. It would help me if you could send me PARs for which there are differences. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

No, I'll correct this in the next beta. Basically the .cfg file is only used to bind keys to driver/screen size combinations. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>
